‘The Lightning Child’ by Che Walker and Arthur Darvill is a Greek drama. I have seen and read Euripides and other Greek plays. It fitted in with my studies of philosophy. So, these three new plays were so exciting for me and I felt the Globe had given me a special present. That year, Shakespeare had to take a back seat.

The Deutsche Bank play for 2014 was ‘The Merchant of Venice’. I felt very cross with the ending. Shylock was forced to become a Christian. Usually he walks off at the end of the play. But this time he remained and was baptised on the stage. He would never have changed his belief. He would rather have died. But that was my opinion.

There were three foreign plays ‘All’s Well that Ends Well’ in Gujarati; ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in British sign language; ‘Punishment without Revenge’ by Lope de Vega in Spanish. The last deals with questions of love and honour. ‘Hamlet’ was touring the world, but they did not take any stewards. Occasional, we heard news about their activities. As we were not really involved, we did not think about it much.

The new plays in 2014 were: ‘Pitcairn’ by Richard Bean. It dealt with the Mutiny on the Bounty. ‘Holy Warriors’ by David Eldridge, focused on the Third Crusade. There was another Greek story that told about the Iliad. It is a book I have dipped into many times, but never managed to read from cover to cover. Plays or films about war, I have avoided. There are too many memories. I did steward ‘Doctor Scroggy’s War’, but did not engage with it.
