Chapter Twenty

Fess-Up!

It’s all your fault,

I am...

Misunderstood.

It’s all because,

Of your own screwed-up,

Childhood.

I will no longer be,

You.

That was so not me.

Admit it.

Divulge it.

Fess-up!

I totally

Outgrew...

Mixed-up,

Dried-up,

Washed-up,

You!

“I’m very disappointed in you,” my Economics’ tutor said a week later, as she repacked her briefcase. “This isn’t like you, Tuesday, not to have your assignments.”

We were in the contemporary living room with its black and white décor. Positive and negative. Ying and yang. North and south. A bipolar color scheme.

I shrugged and attacked my lip. “Sorry.” But, I really, really wasn’t.

Not everyone was disappointed in me, though. Not my guitar teacher – Mr. Tork, the song-writer dude – Baldwin Spikes, Glissando Records, Uncle Monty, William P. DuVal’s prom committee, Brady Paul, or Zelda.

“Excusar,” Rosa said, as she knocked before entering the library. “Senorita Tuesday, the telepfono is for you.”

It must be Brady Paul! I knew he’d call me back.

But why didn’t he call my cell?

“It’s your tio.” Rosa handed me the portable. “He says it’s importante.”

“Hello,” I said, as Rosa dusted her way out of the room. I know she must have hated this black furniture as the escaping fine dust particles floated above it in the stream of sunlight.

“Your mother is on her way home,” Uncle Monty said. “Without me.”

“Really?” I said.

“Yes, well,” he said, “she hopped an earlier flight. Before I knew it, she was out of here. Sorry. Do you want me to call Dr. Butler perhaps to be there when she arrives? She might be upset and...”

“Don’t worry about it,” I said. “I’ll be fine. Later.” I hung up.

“As I was saying, Tuesday.” My teacher – Ms. Disappointed said, as she handed me my failing exam. “If your grades don’t improve...”

“Can you not?” I said, “Please, chill.”

I closed my eyes. My head pounded. I was exhausted. Tired of being Tuesday Greenwood. I so needed to escape. Me. And be back in Brady Paul’s arms. I couldn’t stop thinking about our night on the beach. How he kissed me, touched me, whispered to me, and saved me. And to think, before that, I actually wanted to die. What a total idiot I was.

“Excuse me?” my teacher said.

“Don’t go and get all butt hurt about it.” I opened my eyes. Ms. Disappointed was wearing an I-can’t-believe-that-just-came-out-of-your-mouth look. “All right, whatever,” I said, “I’ll study. Okay?”

Why doesn’t she leave already? And why hasn’t Brady Paul called me? Texted me or something, damn it! What’s up with that?

“Well,” she continued. “I would like to talk to your mother about your grades. I understand from your other tutors, Tuesday, they’re experiencing the same resistance as I am.”

“Didn’t you hear me? I said I would study!”

She stood up. “Yes. I heard you.” And picked up her satchel. “Loud and clear.”

“Sorry,” I said. But, I really, really wasn’t.

She nodded. “Till next week then. Good-bye, Tuesday.”

“Bye.” I stretched out on the couch and reached for my cell. But then the phone call from Uncle Monty brought me back to reality. My mother was arriving home early. And without him.

That sucks.

Is that
