“Ahhhh,” Letitia said. “That explains a great deal. He’s a bonnie man besides being talented and famous. I saw him on the telly and if I weren’t happily married to you, I would have been getting his autograph myself. You told me you don’t believe he shot the French horn player.”

“It doesn’t matter if he did or not. Right now, he’s a suspect and it looks bad for Anna.”

Letitia picked up her tea and took a sip.

“It’s tearing her apart, Tish,” Mac continued. “She looks guilty every time his name comes up.”

“Our Anna would never let her feelings get in the way of her duty,” Letitia said.

“Even if Vranos is cleared, I’m worried.”

“Because?”

“He’s a high and mighty international conductor who hobnobs with presidents and kings. Anna’s just, well, she’s just a cop. I think he’s playing her for the information he can get. He’s not going to hang around once this case is closed.”

“You’re underestimating the lass,” Letitia said. “Vranos would be lucky to have her decide to stick with him.”

“I know that,” Mac said testily. “But she’s a good cop and I don’t want to see her hurt.”

“You’re a good cop too,” Letitia said, covering her husband’s hand with her own. “You can find the killer before Anna gets into trouble. But you can’t stop her from being hurt. No one can do that.”
