Rape is not about sex – it’s about power. ‘Look,’ says the rapist, ‘I can control you so much and so effortlessly, I can still get an erection and fuck you. Do what I want with you. That’s harder than just killing.’

If rape is about power what is sex killing about? Being God?

Rape is to do with sex in some sense, of course. It’s about using sex for power but it’s the power that’s the hit, the turn-on, the drive. With sex killers, that’s also true but it’s the murder, the taking of life, that they seek.

Too few sex violence cases make it to court for the public to understand what really happens. Hollywood comes along and air-brushes rape and sex killings into some ultimate erotic turn-on. Pure crap.

Glasgow produced one of the most prolific sex killers Britain has seen in modern times. John Duffy, known as ‘The Railway Rapist’, was born and brought up in Glasgow. After years of preying on women near railway stations circling London with his partner, David Mulcahy, Duffy was jailed for life in 1988 for two murders and a string of brutal rapes. In 2001, he received another seventeen sentences for seventeen other sex attacks.

Duffy has only been sentenced for some of his crimes. It is likely, by his own admission, that he has raped and killed more women. He has committed so many of these crimes, one blurs into another in his memory. When they jailed Duffy, the court made a promise – the serial sex killer and rapist would die behind bars.

Duffy’s story isn’t covered in this book because he exported his killing elsewhere. The people in this book are in Glasgow and commit their crimes in the city.

Nor, with regret, is another set of important sex cases covered – the seven Glasgow prostitutes murdered in the early 1990s. Jacqueline Gallagher, Tracey Wylde, Margo Lafferty, Marjorie Roberts, Karen McGregor, Leona McGovern, Diane McInally – I salute them all. Poor working women who died horribly. If anyone deserves to be written about these women do. I have views about who might well have been involved but must hold my tongue – or my pen. They’re not names that you will have read in the press. But my limits are this – in such a case, if the cops look like they are pursuing some suspect, I must back off. Justice for the women and their loved ones comes first.

The police tell us they are pursuing a convicted sex killer and multiple rapist, a Glasgow man, Angus Sinclair, for some of these deaths. So be it. Justice for the women – and for Sinclair – must come first.

But it’s not as if it’s difficult to find other sex killers from Glasgow. Tragically, we are spoiled for choice.

Sex killers aren’t just the infamous serial killers who haunt human consciousness through fiction and, sadly, fact. They can be motivated by jealousy, loneliness, being caught out, outrage, lust and a hundred other reasons. Sex killers can be women as well as men and they can be old, young, any age.
