CHAPTER FOUR

Mr. Bubbles Starts to Learn

On Bobby’s visits with his sister,

he’d explained that he’d lost Ming and how he missed her,

though he could not pretend,

Ming’s behavior and greed were such that he couldn’t defend.

As he explained to Beth,

“If I’d married her I’d have met an early death.

She thought that she could just devour my life

without agreeing to be my me wife.

Devoured it whole to make up for her lack

without any thought of giving back.

Now my life will become a disheveled heap,

I’ll be lonely, and my debts will grow deep.”

He felt depressed,

and his spirit’s joy was repressed.

Bobby realized that finding a good wife was not that easy.

He didn’t want someone who was sleazy

or only wanted a ring.

He needed love and wanted the real thing.

Beth suggested he just find a friend or two

for some light conversation and casual things to do.

From the time that he heard Ming was wed,

his heart began feeling increasingly dead.

Yet, he confessed there was also a sense of relief,

following his unexpected release

of Ming to Mr. Banes.

He realized there were losses and also gains

brought about through the whole experience

despite the dent in his confidence.

At times he was plagued with self-doubt.

Sometimes, he was frustrated by things he couldn’t figure out.

So occasionally, he’d stopped by a local pub.

It was just a place where no one would snub

him. He thought the beer could help him regain

some sociability, though it did not contribute to the frame

of reference for those who didn’t know him well.

They concluded that Bobby liked raising hell.

He had no sense of any impending disaster

as he played pool with the guys who raced to drink beers down faster.

There was a new guy, Frank, on the block

who wandered in one day to hock

some real nice belts.

The guys, having drunk too much, said they would help.

After eight beers, Brad put one on and did a hula standing on a chair.

The guys laughed ‘til the bartender shouted, “Get down from there!”

Henry used one like a whip

causing a tray of filled glasses to tip.

Bobby said he had to take a leak.

As he passed by, Frank blurted, “Hey I saw that guy last week!

He was in some fancy joint having a drink

with some skinny, sleazy chink.”

Bobby shut the bathroom door

not wanting to hear any more

from this cock-eyed drunk.

But when Henry heard this he swung and slurred “You skunk!

You’re talkin’ about my friend; besides, that was more than a year ago

and how the hell would you know

her?” he continued. “Every rose has a thorn

but Ming’s not into porn!”

Naturally Frank attempted to defend himself,

and down off the wall came a glass-filled shelf

that was over the bar mirror.

Banging and shattering glass was all Bobby could hear

from inside the stall.

Not knowing what was going on at all,

he turned the bathroom door lock

and walked into the bar room with quite a shock.

Two guys had a couple of chairs they’d hauled

from another room. “The cops are called!”

warned the bartender as four

fully armed cops burst through the door,

followed by four more.

Bobby felt the cold slap of a cuff on his wrist.

Though he knew he’d done nothing, he didn’t resist.
