Everything was lining up well enough. The Defenders were relieved to be home, even if it was under less-than-ideal circumstances; Lola and the other Irukas were safe; nothing had shown up at the island looking for a fight yet; and even Kory and the ancients were cooperating so far. We had the island in full lockdown mode.
So why am I so anxious? I paced the room, feeling like the four walls might squeeze the very breath out of me if I let them. Logically, I knew there was no reason to feel claustrophobic, but I did. It didnât help that the room was divided into two rows of ten holding cells on either side of me. Jaxon, who was outside the door standing guard, had insisted I stay put until we knew nothing was coming. Heâd been the one to find the room for me to hide in, and heâd assured me he wouldnât let anything happen to me. He couldâve found a better room. This one looks like a prison.
I felt like Iâd spent my entire life imprisoned in my mind, being pushed into nonexistence when Sam had control. Iâd awake from a deep slumber to find myself experiencing new things in strange new places. The early years had been the worst. Confused, Iâd had no one to go to for help. The few times Iâd tried my mom, sheâd shut me out like I was the plague, begging me to leave her sweet Sam alone.
I wasnât a virus or some alien life-form trying to take over their daughter. Sam was me, and I was Sam. We were two halves of the same person, but they never saw it that way. They never thought of me as a piece of their daughter, that both of us were fragments that needed to be made whole again.
Lucky for me, Iâd discovered the existence of a new species, a hybrid of sortsâa way for us to heal finally. Of course, being the stronger of the two, I knew I needed to be the one in control. I was Samâs protector. My very existence had come from the moment Iâd saved her. I was her, and she needed me. Why didnât anyone understand that? Having the Defenders follow me, choose me as their leader, wasnât for my own power trip. It was so nothing could ever harm meâor Samâagain. We could keep the world safe. We could be saviors together.
âThatâs what we are doing now, you know,â I whispered aloud, hoping Jaxon couldnât hear me. I needed to get the words out of my head. Thinking too much was killing me. Of course, no one responded to my statement because I was trapped in a jail-like room alone, with not even Sam seeming to be with me.
Glancing at the bars next to me, I grumbled, âThis wonât do.â Marching over to the door, I discovered it was locked from the outside. Banging against it, I yelled, âJaxon, open up!â
The doorknob clicked and then turned.
