“They were banging? Screwing? Playing hide the sausage?”

I threw a sequinned pillow at Ri and hid my face. “Enough! Seriously, the second you mentioned my dad’s… what was it?”

“Yoghurt slinger!”

“Yeah,” I cringed. “That’s the one. You’re so far over what’s appropriate that you can’t even see the line.”

“I know,” she said with a wicked grin. “But this is like the best piece of gossip I’ve heard since Natalie Ashcroft left the school in a hurry with a growing stomach, if you get my meaning.”

“I get your meaning,” I said. Ri was about as subtle as a bull in a china shop. I hadn’t meant to tell her about what I’d seen in my dad’s office, but she’d taken one look at me at school the day after and had known right away that I had something big going on. I’d only convinced her to forget about it during class by promising to share with her that night.

And so, there we were. Me and her in my bedroom, my dad nowhere to be seen of course, and I had a lot more understanding of why he worked so late.

“She is pretty fit,” Ri said.

“That’s not the point,” I groaned, because she was right. Ace’s mother was beautiful, in a way that suggested she spent a whole load of time and money in keeping everything looking the way it should.

“This is good news!” Ri exclaimed. “I mean, it’s totally gross, but don’t you see the power this gives you?”

I frowned.

“Break the news to Ace and he’ll have bigger things to worry about than upsetting you.”

“Oh, no,” I said. “No, no, no. He can’t ever find out about this, Ri.”

“What? This is gold! You can take this thing all the way to the bank!”

“How on Earth would my dad screwing Ace’s mom make my life any better?”

Ri offered me a mournful smile as she came and sat next to me on the bed. She reached for my hand. “He’d want to get rid of your dad,” she said. “It would be the fresh start you want. Maybe you’d even go back to Cali.”

I blinked at her.

“I’d be so sad to see you go,” she said. “But maybe it’s best. For you, I mean.”

I shook my head. “I can’t let that happen. It would ruin my dad’s career. If he gets blacklisted by Ace’s dad, no company would hire him.”

“Some people might say he should have thought about that before introducing her to his yogh-”

“Stop!” I shouted, but I had to laugh. The whole situation was insane. My dad hadn’t shown any interest in a woman since my mom left. It was madness that he’d choose to get involved, literally balls-deep, with the wife of his boss. “Yes, it’s gross and it’s kind of funny, but this can’t get out. You have to promise me you won’t tell anyone.”

Ri raised an eyebrow. “You even need to ask?”

“I know, I just…”

“No, seriously,” she said. “I haven’t proved already that you can trust me? I’m here being your friend, aren’t I?”

“Of course you are,” I said.
