I knew something dramatic had happened because Andy had never behaved in such an off-hand manner when he returned home, no matter how shattered he felt. I kept my distance and kept quiet, hoping that, in time, his mood would change and he would confide in me.
But the atmosphere remained strained and unnatural. Andy didn’t say a word to me, neither did he make any move to kiss or hold or cuddle me. Throughout that evening, I wondered what on earth could have happened to cause Andy to cut me off in such a hurtful way and I sensed open hostility.
He told me he was tired and needed an early night, and I turned off the lights and went to join him. As I lay in the dark next to him, he made no attempt to touch or kiss me, or even to say ‘goodnight’.
‘What’s going on, Andy?’ I asked.
‘Nothing,’ he replied, ‘I’m just tired.’
‘No,’ I answered, ‘Something’s up.’
There was a moment’s silence. Then he said, ‘Frances, I don’t love you any more.’
I said nothing, struck dumb by this bald statement. Receiving no response, he said a few moments later, ‘But don’t worry, it’s probably only a phase.’
With that I got out of bed, went downstairs and made myself a cup of tea. I needed to think. I went into the living-room, sat on the sofa and pulled Jo’s baby blanket over me to keep warm. Without realising what was happening, I felt the tears on my cheeks and I let them flow, feeling lonely and unwanted.
Minutes later, I could have laughed out loud in frustration and hopelessness because I suddenly heard
