Saturday morning Jonathan arrived at the Ladiesâ Auxiliary meeting hall less than ten minutes before the press conference started. What he wanted was to see Taylor. In the past three days heâd actuallyâalmostâmissed her. He who didnât let himself get close enough to miss anyone.
But instead of a gorgeous honey-blonde from his past, he ran directly into Katrina.
âI wanted to ask where you ran off to, but I already know,â Katrina said, blocking his way. âHow did the shows go?â
âGreat. The spot ratings were high, the feedback encouraging.â He had, in fact, received rave reviews. His agent was doing the happy dance. The syndication suits had given him another pep talk on the importance of winning the contest. Jonathan found himself on the verge of getting everything he wanted.
Katrina pouted slightly. âI wish youâd told me where you were going. I could have come with you. Offered you some private coaching.â
The purr in her voice was more predatory than seductive. Jonathan smiled pleasantly and lightly squeezed her hand. âKatrina, youâre way more woman than I could handle. Thanks for thinking of me, but Iâm not prepared to be one more notch in your garter. Iâm a sensitive kind of guy.â
She smiled. âI would think you would be more than up to the task.â
âYou flatter me.â
Horrify was a better word, but why make trouble? He disentangled himself from her touch and headed for the front of the room, all the while searching for Taylor. He spotted her talking to someone from the media. When she saw him, she excused herself and headed his way.
âI want you to know that I checked your reasons for standing me up last night,â she said lightly, although he thought he saw something troubled lurking in her eyes. âThere really was a wild storm circling through the middle part of the country both Thursday and Friday.â
âTell me about it,â Jonathan said. âMy flight to Dallas was canceled. I got as far as Phoenix, where I had to spend the night in the airport. I barely made it in time this morning.â He glanced around the rapidly filling room. âLooks like weâre going to have a big crowd.â
âWe are.â
Taylor took his arm and led him to the side of the room. She wore her hair loose today. The soft curls flattered her pretty face.
Heâd missed her. Heâd missed talking with her and arguing with her. He wanted to say it was all about sex, but he knew that if someone had offered him a couple of hours in her presence with the restriction that they couldnât touch, he would have agreed in a heartbeat.
âIâm sorry I was delayed last night,â he said, his voice sounding husky. Okay, maybe heâd been exaggerating about the sex not being important.
âMe, too.â She suddenly looked nervous. âLook, I really need to talk to you. I wanted to explain everything last night, but what with your flight being canceled and allâ¦â She shrugged, then glanced around the room. âJonathan, Iâm sorry. Iâve been waiting for the right time and this isnât it.
