Chapter Eight
No sooner had the elevator reached Riverviewâs underground parking lot and they exited than Aprilâs cell phone rang again.
âArenât you going to answer that?â Lucas inquired when April pointedly ignored the ring.
âNo, Iâm not. Itâs probably Tom again, set on reminding me to start working on the debates,â April answered with a scowl. âHe isnât the type to give up easily.â Her chocolate-induced euphoria faded at the reminder that trouble could always be just a phone call away.
âWhat if the caller isnât Tom?â
April stopped in midstride. The only people who had her private cell phone number were her mother, Tom Eldridge, Rita and Lili. With her mother away visiting Aprilâs oldest brother, Mitchell, in Florida and providing the caller wasnât Tom, that left Rita or Lili. âMaybe youâre right,â she said reluctantly as she lifted the small phone out of her purse, flipped it open and held it to her ear. âApril here.â
She listened for a moment. âSure. No, itâs no problem, Lili.â As she spoke, April handed her car keys to Sullivan and motioned to him to go ahead and click the car door open. âWhatever I had planned for tonight can wait until tomorrow. No, honestly, Iâm sure. No, itâs no problem. Yes, I know youâre in the emergency room at Chicago General. Try to relax and donât worry. Weâll be right over.â
April folded the cell phone and dropped it in her purse. âSomethingâs just come up with Lili and her little boy, Paul.â
âI heard. What happened to him?â Lucas took the keys without further comment. He knew that whatever had happened to the boy, it had to be serious, or April would never have handed over the keys without an argument.
âWould you believe Paul fell downstairs chasing his sister when they were leaving the dentistâs office!â April said as she slid into the passenger side of the car. âLili said he may have broken his arm. Theyâre at the hospital right now.â
Lucas murmured his sympathy. âDid that once myself in grade school. The kidâs lucky to have his mother with him. At the time I broke mine, my mother was off somewhere âfindingâ herself. I didnât get much sympathy from my father.â
April saw Lucasâs lips set in a hard line. Without a loving, attentive mother in his life, no wonder he had such a poor opinion of women. âThat must have been hard on you.â
âIt was, although having my classmates autograph the cast made me feel like a hero.â He smiled at the long-ago memory. âHow old is the kid, anyway?â
âHe and his twin sister, Paulette, just turned six. Paul is like a miniature tornado and takes advantage of her. I suppose most little girls have that problem with boys until they grow up and expect equal treatment.â She glanced at Sullivan. âJudging from your article, I gather you didnât know that.â
Lucasâs eyebrows rose. âBack to the mating-game article, are we? I thought we were talking about a six-year-old.â
April grinned. âHow could I forget? But youâre right.
