Heart Alliance: Downtown Georgetown Location

Group Therapy

* * *

Despite the butterflies fluttering around my stomach as I approached the blue door that the guard of the building pointed me towards, I pushed it open anyway. Immediately, the cool air-conditioned room sucked me inside as I quickly estimated twenty pairs of eyes were on me.

“Welcome,” a tall black man said as he stood up. “Are you looking for Heart Alliance?”

My voice was not working at the moment, so I nodded my head instead.

“Good.” He smiled, displaying white teeth amongst his genuine smile. “I’m Jonathan. You can sit here.”

The man was the equivalent of tall, dark and handsome. He had medium length locks, a full beard, and kind eyes. His voice was deep but also inviting with a slight command that did not leave room for a lot of talk back. He could probably be a professor or teacher.

I followed his directions and sat down next to a woman, whose fingers had a white-knuckled grip on the handle of her purse. My eyes looked around the group of women of all different races, colors, sizes, and ethnicities, and I wondered what I was in store for with this group. Would it provide what I needed and was it worth the time?

“Can you please introduce yourself to the group by telling us your name and why you’re here?” Jonathan asked.

My eyes moved to him, and I nodded before saying, “Hi, my name is Alexus, and I’m here because I’m a…” I wasn’t sure how to say it. “Uh, I’m overweight, not happy about that and was told that this might be a place to come to terms with my problem.”

“You’re in the right place,” a woman with a purple hajib over her head said with a nod. ”Welcome.”

“Thank you.” I answered.

“Alexus, it’s good to have you join us. As you will see, there isn’t just one problem in this group session that we tackle. We will address many of the underlining issues with support, practical steps, and even referrals if necessary. We meet every Wednesday. We talk, chat, I might occasionally insert my thoughts, but we support each other. Both here and after class.”

Jonathan moved his arm around the group and finished, “That’s us. Camila, would you like to continue?”

“Sure.” A tall woman with long legs and thigh-high boots sat across from me. She was beautiful caramel complexion with flawless skin and on the thin side. Confidence exuded through her unlike some of the rest of the women, but there was a camouflaged sadness about her. I could see it because I was all too familiar with that particular mask. She also didn’t like herself. “Like I was saying. Me having sex with guys is cool. No strings attached and don’t start your shit Eliana about feeling emotionally connected to them. I can promise you one thing.” Her eyes sharpened. “I don’t have many emotions left and fucking a man damn sure won’t bring one.”

“Camila,” Jonathan said in a sing-song warned tone.
