Gene checked the ropes that bound the two men. He’d tied them up at the ankles and knees, their hands were bound behind their backs, and they were also tied to the bed frame. I stood awkwardly to the side, holding the pistol. The first man I’d hit on the head was only semiconscious with just the occasional groan or fluttering of his eyes.

Gene checked the ropes and tightened them a little more.

“Tying us up doesn’t save you. You got lucky, but even if you get out of the house without being seen, how far do you think you’ll get?”

“It’s a big world,” Gene replied.

“Not so big that we couldn’t find you here.”

“Big talk from the man who’s tied up.” Gene turned to me and said, “You should wait here.”

“Where are you going?”

“I have to check on my parents. I’ll be back soon.”

“I have to go with you. Please don’t leave me.”

He hesitated before answering. “Let me go downstairs first and make sure it’s safe. Okay?”

I nodded and offered him the pistol.

“You need to keep it. If he tries to get loose, you need to shoot him.”

“What?”

“He’s tied up, but just in case. I’ll take the second gun.”

He went over and picked it up off the window ledge, and then he was gone.

“It’s not too late for you to get out of this,” the man said. “We don’t want you. Only him. Untie me. We’ll lock you in the closet and we’ll leave.”

“I’m not untying you.”

“You would if you knew what was really happening here. You have no idea who he is.”

“I know exactly who he is.”

“You don’t even know what he is. You think he’s human. He’s another species.”

“Yeah, he’s an alien.” Had this guy been talking to Liv?

“He’s not an alien, but he isn’t a human. He’s not like you or me.”

“I’m nothing like you!” I snapped.

Gene came back into the room. “There’s nobody else in the house. We’re all right to go downstairs.”

“She’d be safer here with me,” the man said. “At least we’re the same species and —”

Gene stuffed a sock in the man’s mouth. He then grabbed a shirt and wrapped it around like a gag to stop him from spitting it out.

“We haven’t got much time. Come on.”

Gene went to the door. With a backward glance at the two men tied to the edge of the bed, I rushed forward to be right by Gene as he started down the stairs. He held his pistol out in front of him. I held mine off to the side.

Getting to the main floor, I saw there was furniture knocked over — then I caught sight of his father. He was sitting on the sofa. His head was slightly back, his eyes were open, and there was a gaping hole in his chest with blood staining everything. I gasped.

“I’m so sorry you had to see this.”

“Is he …”

“He’s dead.”

Those two men tied up in Gene’s room had murdered him. I felt completely numb.

Off to the side, I saw a pair of legs sticking out from behind a chair.
