No, Meg argued with herself. You barely know him. You can't just corner him out of nowhere. What do you even expect to happen?
That was exactly it. She didn't know what would happen. It would probably be nothing. But then again, was it really better to sit around and know she wasn't doing anything to take advantage of a possible connection? It couldn’t hurt to seek him out, if only for a moment. She figured she should thank him for rescuing her the other day, and there was nothing much else to do but sit around and be miserable. So Meg hauled herself to her feet and limped out of the lounge towards the front desk, hoping he wouldn’t be too hard to locate.
Just thank him for helping you. That's all.
Meg felt her heart pounding. Just the prospect of taking this bizarre chance was enough to put her nerves on edge.
What if he barely remembers you?
She froze in her tracks. It was a silly thought, but nonetheless jarring. But who would forget rescuing someone from a fall? She supposed that wasn't the issue, rather the fact that he was undoubtedly a busy man with a lodge to run and other guests to attend do. He had a dinner to sponsor the next night, anyway.
Meg's thoughts overwhelmed her and brought down the cold, hard hammer of reality. Her flight response was stronger than she gave it credit for, shutting off any desire to seek Adrian out. Nevermind, it said.
"Megan?"
She started at the sound of her name coming from an unfamiliar yet distinctive voice. Her gut knew who it was before her head did.
"Good morning," she said stupidly, watching as he took a step between her and the front desk. Today he wore soft grays and blacks in the form of a blazer, vest, tie, and slacks. His dark hair was less wild as it had been when she had met him in the woods. Altogether, Adrian Wolfe looked professional and more clean-cut, as though he hadn't been traipsing through the woods. But his eyes…they were as penetrating as ever, boring into hers with just as much intensity as if they were only an inch apart.
He had found her before she had gotten the chance to change her mind.
"I was hoping I'd run into you today," he told her matter-of-factly. He was at Meg's side in a moment offering a hand to steady her. She took it even though she didn't feel unbalanced, and Adrian led her away from the desk to spot near the coffee shop. "I hope your ankle is feeling better."
"Yes." Meg cast a glance at him and quickly averted her eyes. She cursed the universe for bringing him to her just as soon as she had wanted to back out. It was too late now. "I…I never got a chance to say thank you for saving my ass yesterday. So…thank you."
She wanted to smack herself in the forehead for sounding that unbelievably awkward, but Adrian only gave her that crooked half-smile as though he was amused with her.
