Chapter 12

Later, after they’d done with the police and the doctor, Nancy let George drive her back to her own house. She didn’t feel like sleeping in the share-house tonight, especially after the break-in. Was the burglar the same person who’d attacked her?

George switched off the car engine and sat in silence for a moment. “Nance, I’ve gotta say it again. I’m sorry about this morning, and I do take this seriously.” She cleared her throat. “I do take you seriously.”

“I know.” Nancy grasped her hand.

“How are you feeling?”

“Honestly? I’m feeling angry.” Her voice shook. “Actually, I’m completely furious!”

“Truly?”

“Yes, truly! In the last twelve hours, I’ve been chased by a rabid dog, vilified on television, cyber-bullied, robbed, and now some wannabe assassin beats me up and threatens my life via Siri, and there’s not a single thing I can do about it!” Nancy thumped the dashboard. “Yes, I’m furious! Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Hey, I’m not arguing. I’m a big fan of furious, you know that.” George seemed to be fighting not to smile at Nancy’s outburst, and Nancy couldn’t decide whether to smile back or get more enraged.

Her tone turning serious, George said, “Whoever did this, it seems like it’s connected to Martin’s death. They might come after you again.”

Nancy dug her nails into her palm. “I know that.”

“So we’ve got two choices. Either we hide you somewhere till the authorities figure out what happened to Martin—”

“Oh, wonderful. Do you have a timeframe for that?’

“Or,” George went on, “we figure out for ourselves what’s going on.”

Nancy’s heart softened at the word “we”.

“And what if we find something you don’t like?” she asked. “What if the person behind all this is your old mate Ken?”

George looked at her. “Then I’ll put his balls in a mousetrap.”

Nancy smiled at last. George’s sympathy had taken the edge off her anger, and she didn’t feel scared now. In fact, energy coursed through her, like she could run a mile and bench-press this car. She’d had enough to being a target. Whatever this thing was, she wanted to understand it and beat it.

George asked, “You want to go inside and start making plans?”

Nancy looked at her directly. Her gaze slid from George’s shadowy eyes to the silver streaks in her dark hair, to her hands, which were tanned and roughened and spread across the wheel. Her own pulse drummed, her body wide awake and alive, every single molecule of it.

George met her gaze. “Or…do you want to do something else first?”

Nancy swallowed, staring at her.

“Oh, God, yes.”

* * *

George’s front door slammed. Its wooden panels reverberated against Nancy’s hips and shoulder blades as George lifted her back against it.

The hall lay in darkness, alleviated only by the glow of the porch light through the rosy facets of the stained-glass window. Nancy shut her eyes, relishing the hot swirl of George’s tongue in her mouth, their mingled breath, the texture of George’s leather belt as Nancy gripped it, pulling the other woman up against her.

They grappled
