Chapter 19

A week later, Amira is two moves away from beating Cillian in their third round of chess. He returns from the kitchen with a new bottle of Malbec when she moves her rook, taking his knight.

“You’re getting good at this.” He says, pouring her a glass.

“Or maybe you’re just not challenging me.” She accepts the glass as he sits on the carpet in front of the coffee table.

“Nope. I would never let you win. You won’t learn anything if I let you win.” He looks at the board now, trying to get out of the mess he has made for himself five moves ago.

She stares at him over the rim of her glass. “Oxford called today.”

He looks up at her, surprise on his face.

“They are keen on having me teach for a semester.”

“Amira, that’s amazing news!” she doesn’t have time to register that he has taken her glass out of her hand and swept her off the couch into a bear hug. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier? We should celebrate.”

She giggles as he twirls her around the living room.

“Whiskey!” he says, planting her feet back onto the carpeted floor and racing to the kitchen for glasses. When he returns, he grabs the Macallan from the cupboard under the television. Amira is still standing exactly where he left her and watches as he excitedly pours the amber liquid into their glasses. He hands her a glass and meets her eyes. “Congratulations.” Then he bends over the coffee table, pushes his king onto its side and says, “You win.”

They clink their glasses together, drink their whiskey, and settle next to each other on the sofa.

“Tell me everything.” He says, his eyes wide with anticipation. “I want to know everything.”

Two hours later, Cillian puts Amira into a black cab and waves as the car leaves for the Highstreet. It had been a good day. How many of these they had left was yet to be seen. But, standing on the front steps of his flat, watching the cab stop at the end of the street before turning left, he can’t think of anyone else he would want to spend his time with. Amira is the best of him. And their journey has been marked with so much turmoil and surprises. But with each passing day, he feels more connected to her than ever. And he is so damn proud of her right now. Teaching at Oxford had been a lifelong dream of hers. And it was finally going to happen. And he would be right there supporting her every step of the way.
