Chapter Twelve
“Thought you were going to bring your pretty lady with you today?”
Nathan shook his head as Jack slid into the booth across from him, a pint in each hand. After they’d both taken long drinks, Nathan sighed and set the glass down.
“She had plans.”
“She’s had plans the last several weeks,” Jack pointed out then put his hand over his heart dramatically. “Do you think she’s avoiding me?”
“Yes, because it’s all about you, mate. As always.” He scrubbed a hand down his face and slumped back, groaning as his muscles protested.
The footie game earlier had taken its toll, and Nathan longed to go home and let the shower wash away his aches. If it’d been the entire crew going out, he’d have bowed out, but it was just Jack, and honestly, Nathan didn’t particularly want to head back to an empty flat. He’d gotten too used to coming home to Meg.
“What’d she have going on?” Jack asked curiously. “Why the hell are you sitting here with me in the pub instead of spending time with her?”
“She took the train down to Bath for the day and won’t be home until late.”
His friend laughed and shook his head. “Again...why aren’t you with her? The guys would have understood if you ditched for one fucking week. Would’ve given you enormous amounts of grief about it, but we’d’ve understood.”
“We’ve been spending enormous amounts of time together; she’s on holiday and deserves some time to herself.”
“Does she now?” Jack cocked his head to the side. “Is that her wanting some time or you wanting some time?”
Nathan rolled his eyes and set his attention on draining his glass. Jack flopped back slightly on the bench, a huge shit-eating grin creasing his face.
“You’re falling for her.”
“Fuck off.”
“You are!” His expression quickly fell. “What’s bothering you about that? Too fast? Don’t you think she’s feeling the same way? Has she said she’s not? Done something that makes you think she’s—”
“For Christ’s sake, Jack, shut it!” He sighed heavily. “I’m going to get another.”
Jack stopped him with a hand on his arm before he could get up. “Told you, today’s on me. Be right back.”
With a clap on Nathan’s shoulder, he pushed his way through the crowd to the bar. Nathan tiredly dragged a palm over his face again. Fuck Jack being a perceptive little shit. He should have known his friend would zero in on the one thing Nathan didn’t want to talk about. What he didn’t feel ready to talk about. Hell, he didn’t feel ready to think about, not full on anyhow. His feelings for Meg, the depth of them, had been dancing along the edges of his mind for some time now, but he’d gotten quite adept at ignoring them in favor of simply enjoying what he and Meg had...temporarily. And that, that right there was what he needed to keep first and foremost in his thoughts. This was temporary. Soon, she’d be heading back home, and that would be the end of it.
