Chapter 8

Anne was getting frustrated as she was going through her closet for something to wear. “UGH!” She growled to herself. She started frantically looking through her skirts and pants and still found nothing. She turned around and saw her mom looking over at her leaning on her door frame to her room. Anne got startled from seeing her there looking at her because she didn’t see or hear her coming.

“You okay?” Her mom asked her, looking at her. “What’s wrong?”

Anne started moving her clothes in her dresser and closet to her bed trying to find something. “I can’t find anything to wear.” She held the darkest colors she could find to her body in front of the mirror. She was disgusted and threw them on the bed. “Ugh!” She said sitting on the bed looking at her clothes. “Everything is so ‘cheerful’ and ‘flowery’,” Anne just stopped in her tracks looking in the mirror. “Life isn’t so cheerful. It’s actually pretty horrible.” Anne sat back on her bed looking at her mother for support. Her mom recognized Anne’s cry for help and sat down next to her. “You really think life is so horrible?”

“No,” she surrendered. “It’s just, I know bad things happen, but for someone to be in the hospital badly beaten and for him to lose his father the same night from some random animal attack seems to be more than what we are seeing,” Anne stopped. “And then on top of that, Kale…” Anne stopped herself again wiping a tear from her eye.

“Kale? Honey is something else bothering you?” Anne’s mom asked her.

Anne just shook her head, “I haven’t seen…” and then she stopped herself. She went back to her closet to find something to wear.

“Seen what?” Her mom asked.

Anne sat down next to her mom. “Nothing mom, I don’t even know if it’s my place,” Anne put her head on her mom’s shoulders. “Do you have anything in black mom?”

“I have something you can wear,” she offered. She walked up to Anne’s dresser and grabbed a flower. She put it in Anne’s hair. “In dark times, a flower can be a powerful gesture.” She kissed on the forehead. “Come on, let’s get you ready.”
