Four weeks had passed since Bert Gras had threatened to kill me if I didn’t give him the money in the safe. I had just started to get over my abduction and then my whole world had come crashing down. Since then, the frequencies of my nightmares had increased. My husband often had to wake me up to stop me from screaming in my sleep.

I started booking more appointments with Dr. Tonella in order to speed up my recovery. She really helped me, and over time, we became so close that I began to see her as a friend.

Alexander took care of our bedroom’s repainting and redecorating. All traces of blood were gone. Unfortunately, I still hadn’t managed to pluck up the courage to sleep in there. We’d moved to the bedroom we’d intended to use only for sex, the place where I felt happy and secure. It didn’t trigger memories of Bert Gras and Briseis barging in through the door and threatening to slit my throat.

“Didn’t I tell you we’d see each other again to finish what we’d started?” He’d asked me rhetorically. That could mean only one thing: the note I’d received at my wedding was by him.

But how had he managed to get it to me?

I decided that no matter how much I pondered that question, I’d never find the answer. Our butler had told me some woman had dropped off the letter at the hotel’s reception.
