We should be dragging ass since the guys didn’t sneak out of Louise’s house until after four in the morning. I guess I can’t speak for the rest of them, but ever since I got the news alert during third period, my nerves are frenzied. I can’t stop refreshing for updates.

The headlines vary, but in the end, they all say the same thing…

Senator Cillian Collins has been funneling money to the same account for years—the identity of the receiver is being kept confidential for now. A special investigation has been ordered by the FBI.

As the years progressed, so has the amount and frequency of the payments. Apparently the price of parking isn’t the only thing affected by inflation over the years.

I didn’t know what Cade had in mind when he said he was going to ruin Dad’s day, but this wasn’t it. Not that I care about any of Dad’s days, but in the matter of hours, this has blown into a national scandal that rivals cigars and interns. Being his second scandal in the matter of months isn’t helping Dad’s cause.

He’s done everything he can to let the affair with his Chief of Staff evaporate into the wind like a trendy shoe from last season, but money is different. Payments like that are different when you hold a leadership position in the Senate, especially as finance committee chair. And unlike the sex scandal, there’s no gray area or hearsay.

The proof is in the numbers in the form of bank records.

Nothing is more official than bank records, right?

We might be going on little-to-no sleep, but our diverse and eccentric little group is not using the lunch hour to catch a nap. We’re all focused on our phones.

“Fucking-A.” Levi tenses. His chair is glued to mine, and our bodies are one from my shoulder to my knee. He looks up and spears my big brother with a sly grin. “Dude. You’re a genius. You did it.”

Even Jack has the decency to show a little discretion. He sits up straight and hisses. “Really?”

“Here it is,” Mason whispers. “I want to be you when I grow up, Cade.”

I grab Levi’s phone to see what he’s reading.

I knew Cade was a genius, but this makes it official. I read the headline aloud. “As the office of Cillian Collins reels from this morning’s news, they have canceled their campaign rally in Tucson tomorrow.” I look up at Cade who sits across the table from us and lower my voice. “Are you sure this was completely anonymous? You’ll be in so much trouble if this comes back on you.”

When I see his face, I realize I’ve underestimated how angry Cade is with Dad. He’s been upset since we arrived here, not angry. I assumed it had to do more with Mom being in a facility and being separated from her.

But as well as I know my brother, I missed the anger element. He leans forward with more emotion than I’ve ever seen from him. “I don’t give a shit.
