I had thought that we would sail from New Orleans, the nearest port, but after boarding the trains—late one afternoon early in September—we learned, by grapevine telegraph, that we were bound for Newport News, Virginia.

The next morning we were in Tennessee and by noon in North Carolina—beautiful states. For hours I looked out of the car window at the passing landscape—the green valleys and plateaus, rivers and mountains and forests.

Toward mid-forenoon our journey became very exciting. It seemed that the people of towns through which we had passed telephoned to the communities ahead that troop-trains were coming, and so wherever we stopped, and even in places where we did not stop, there were mobs of people along the tracks: small-town Americans, feverish with war patriotism, carrying the Stars and Stripes and white flags with red stars in the center, denoting the number of boys in their families who were in the service. There were lovely Southern girls, dozens of them at every place, passing out sandwiches, coffee, and kisses; giving us their addresses with requests that we write to them “from over there.” With most of the men fully recovered from the “flu,” there was much laughing and sex-talk in the cars between towns, and much sexy whooping from car windows wherever a smiling young feminine face appeared along the way.
