Life wasn’t fair. Not fair at all, she decided as she clung to the steering wheel thirty-five minutes later. The crew was gone for the day. She’d passed them on the two-lane road leading to the isolated location as they headed home. But there was one person still on site, walking the newly installed roof for a final inspection.

With the sun just beginning to set, he was bathed in dark-golden light. The mirrored safety glasses he wore, coupled with the white hardhat that shadowed half his face, gave him a hard, impersonal expression when he glanced her way. She’d known him most of her life, but suddenly he looked like a stranger. A very sexy stranger. A tingle worked its way down her spine as she was faced with a man who barely resembled the good-natured protector she’d always seen him as.

He walked to the edge of the roof and started climbing down the ladder, pausing a moment to disconnect his safety harness’s lanyard from its anchor point. Watching him, the way the leg straps emphasized his tight ass as it bunched with every movement of his body, Ava had more problems than her heart. Like the achy, needy spot between her legs.

Every woman had their type. Logan had always been about farm boys, which was why it made sense for her to hook up with the Calhoun twins. Taylor was all about cars and Sin was the perfect man for her. She wouldn’t want to be with someone who couldn’t strip an engine as fast as she could. For Ava, she’d always had a thing for hardworking, blue-collar men. Maybe it was because of her dad, who’d worked for the parish road development department, but none of the men who came into the offices of Alfred & Son with their suits and ties did it for her.

Hyde had always been her ideal, even when he was nothing more than an eight-year-old protecting little kids from bullies. But now, seeing him in his element, sauntering toward her with his sweaty t-shirt clinging to his torso, that damn safety harness lovingly detailing his groin… She felt as though she was about to spontaneously combust. Just go up in flames all from watching him climb off a roof.

With every step he took towards her car, her body reacted more. Her heart pounded out a primal rhythm, her blood swooshed through her veins as it raced to all the tingly bits of her body, and her breathing escalated. She wanted to put the car in reverse and drive away. She wanted to just forget that this man got her motor revving faster than any of her ex-boyfriends had on their best days. And he did it just by breathing.

“Hey Ava, you got the plans for me?” he asked all casually, as though he hadn’t just soaked her panties. He even stopped a few feet away from the car and stood there with his hands on his hips, looking like something out of a pinup calendar for office women who loved construction workers.
