Chapter Thirteen

Their weekend had been like some kind of crazy marathon, but it was over. Sunday morning, they purchased a small dome tent and pitched it under a tree, next to a familiar stream, in the shadow of a very large hill. Bobby was finally ready to go home, but it was obvious, no matter how crazy the weekend had been, he enjoyed being with them. He mused it was one of the wildest adventures he’d been on in a long time. He kissed Cass’s cheek and gave AJ a hug and told them not to leave the UK without coming down to his house to say goodbye. They assured him they couldn’t possibly forget to do that. He also told them he was arranging some time off from work, so when AJ had his surgery, he would be there for both of them.

Cass watched his vehicle as he drove away, “You were right about Bobby; he is a really good person. And he kicks ass,” she laughed.

“Told ya,” AJ said as he bumped against her shoulder. “Did you tell your dad what happened?”

“Oh, yes. I called him and told him to make sure everybody who works for us knows Dirk is not to be coming around the business.”

“So are we reading inside or outside?”

“Let’s clean everything up, remove all our stuff from under the hill, and read the last chunk outside. Charlie will appreciate that, won’t you, boy?” The dog was stretched out on the grass in total comfort. We can seal the holes tomorrow and, I guess, get ready for Africa.”

“You mean it?” he asked, utterly surprised. “You’re coming with me?”

“It’s like you said, it doesn’t matter where I am when I’m just gathering data. I don’t know how well I’ll do surfing though; my balance is a little off.”

He pulled her in tightly, kissing her forehead, eyes, nose, and ending on her lips, “Cass, I can’t wait anymore. I want you so badly.”

“You won’t have to. Before we leave, I’m going to tell you…” she swallowed hard, “…everything.”

“You’re finally going to trust me with all of it?”

“I’ve trusted you for a while now, but I’m still scared.”

“Let’s get this done,” he said, motioning to the hill with his eyes.

Later in the afternoon they were ready for their final venture into the realm of Kingdom Hill. Cass had no idea that her promise to tell AJ everything hadn’t been necessary because the story of this once great place was about to rip it straight out of her heart.

That night, I lay awake waiting for the hour I would meet Nyles. Sarai knew of my meeting, but she was so depleted, mentally and physically, that she slept while I watched the time draw near. I did not like leaving her alone, but no one should know of my absence. I silently slipped away once the moon moved to three-quarters across the night sky. I was grateful that it was but a slight moon, hoping no one would be up to see me cross the bailey and head for the southern gate.
