SAVVY LAY TRAPPED inside a car, her seat belt restraining her in a choke hold against the back of her seat. She couldn’t reach the Release button with the door smashed in, pushing against her thigh. But she had to get out, had to check on the baby.

“Help me,” she yelled, hoping someone would hear her. She glanced over to the man sitting in the driver’s seat.

Covered in blood, he lay crushed against the steering wheel. Blood coated his hair, the seat, the dash, every surface in view.

Savvy looked down at her arm. Everywhere she looked was blood. On her sleeve, her hands and the side of her face, making her hair stick to her skin. Was it her blood or his? She looked at the man beside her, her stomach lurching. He didn’t move, his chest neither rising nor falling. Dead. A chill slithered over her, shaking her body. Who was he?

Shouldn’t she know who he was? She’d been riding with him. Surely she knew him. Over her shoulder, a whimper alerted her to the occupant of the backseat. A baby’s weak cries wrenched her heart and made her try even harder to get out of her seat to get to the child trapped in the back.

Her vision blurred, the light filtering through the broken windshield fading at the edges. “Don’t cry, baby,” she called. “Everything will be okay,” she lied, unable to help herself or the baby. She drifted in and out of consciousness, trapped and unable to reach the belt’s release.

A bright light lit the sky, shining down into her eyes and suddenly she was free of the seat belt, floating through space, unable to get her feet beneath her. She drifted toward the bright light where a figure awaited her. A small child with coppery curls held out her hand. She smiled and waved, her chubby cheeks dimpling in her happiness.

Savvy reached out to the angelic child, her arms aching to hold her.

The tiny girl turned and toddled into the light, closing a door between them with a soft click, the light extinguished except for what escaped around the edges.

Savvy sat up in bed, her heart pounding against her rib cage, perspiration slick across her forehead. She searched the room for the baby. Where was she? Where was the coppery-haired child? Of the two doors in the room, light shone from beneath only one.

Throwing the sheets to the side, Savvy leaped from the bed and stumbled toward the door. With every step, the room grew darker, her vision blurring. She had to get to the baby. At last she reached the door and flung it open.

Instead of a baby, a man stood in front of her, bare chested, his face covered in white foam, dark brown eyes widening.

She swayed.

He dropped a razor into the sink and reached out, pulling her against his chest. “What’s wrong, Savvy?”

“Where’s the baby?” She fisted her hands and pounded against his chest. “Where is she?”

“Savvy.” His hands slipped around her back and he hugged her to him.
