CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
“Oh, I know,” Paige said with a laugh. “She’s told me in no uncertain terms that Zumba is not part of the curriculum.”
Fiona laughed along with Paige, wondering when the last time was that she’d laughed so heartily and sincerely. She’d run into Paige in the breezeway yesterday and Paige had suggested they share lunch today. She agreed, thinking she might get a chance to ask some of the questions Mother Hogan had passed by her. But now, sitting out in the courtyard with clouds and a slight breeze keeping the temperature comfortable, she was enjoying herself too much to be concerned with Mother Hogan’s intended interrogation.
“She likes to pretend she runs the school,” Fiona said. “When Director Sanchez left we were all hoping she’d retire but she stuck it out. Director Avery seems to like her.”
“Maybe he just tolerates her,” Paige suggested.
Fiona nodded, her gaze traveling over Paige’s features—her blond hair tucked behind each ear, smooth skin, makeup applied to look like there was no makeup. Fiona didn’t wear makeup, never had. Only when she went to college did she see women with makeup. One night when she’d been feeling particularly rebellious, she’d almost purchased some. But in the end, she’d remember Mother Hogan’s warning not to get sucked into the outside world. She wished she had now. Paige looked so fresh, so wholesome. So beautiful. Her blue eyes had a hint of green in them today, perhaps from being outside. There was also a sparkle in those eyes that she envied, and she wondered if hers ever had that. She realized she was staring when Paige stopped talking.
“Are you okay?” Paige asked gently. She reached across the table, resting her hand on Fiona’s forearm. Her fingers were warm and Fiona enjoyed the touch.
“Yes. I’m sorry, I was—” Staring? Yes, Fiona, she could see that, she chastised herself. She looked at her again, her eyes expressive. “You and CJ are really in love, aren’t you?”
Paige seemed startled by the question, and Fiona was surprised to see a faint blush cross her cheek as she sat back.
“Yes. We are,” Paige said with a smile. “Does that bother you?”
“Oh, no. I don’t have a problem with that. I’m used to it now. It’s just...well, it must be nice,” she said and even she heard the wistfulness in her voice.
Paige tilted her head. “You’ve never been in love?”
Fiona shook her head. “No. I can’t even imagine what it’s like.”
Paige raised an eyebrow slowly. “Not even with the father of your baby?”
Fiona’s eyes widened in surprise. “You know?”
Paige leaned forward, her voice low. “You weren’t showing last Sunday, I swear, but today...” she said, her gaze landing on Fiona’s slightly protruding stomach.
Fiona covered it quickly, not knowing what to say. She knew enough about anatomy and childbirth to know she shouldn’t be showing for months yet, but yes, every day she felt herself getting bigger. She didn’t know what look was on her face, but Paige’s fingers circled her arm again.
“Sweetie, I’m sorry.
