Chapter 8

Millie crawled across the floor to the couch where I was sitting.

“No, no!” she screamed. “He murdered her!” I threw my arms around her as she screamed, “Oh Gord, Oh Gord, he murdered her, he murdered her!”

I met a friend of mine at the town hall, and I asked him if he ever went home.

“Not often,” he said. “Home is not like it used to be. My wife and I aren’t sleeping, and we haven’t been getting along very well for the past week now. I’ve been saying the same things about this case as everyone else, but when I say how I feel at home, my wife flips out. That poor girl. What’s happened to her?”

“You know, Michael agreed to take the lie detector test,” I told him, “and we believe he’s gone to the police station to do just that.” I was surprised to see a look of doubt on his face.

“I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you,” my friend replied. “I think I have him figured out. I think we’ll be disappointed.”

I changed the subject and asked him where he thought Sam’s body was. He pointed to the northwest. “Back over those hills somewhere,” he said. “If we hadn’t had that snowfall, I believe we would have found her body days ago.” Then he wiped tears from his eyes, and said, “Those poor people, Millie and George. I know I should go visit them, but I don’t have the heart. I don’t have a clue what to say to them.”

“If you want, you can come with me at about seven,” I said. But I knew he wasn’t going to show.

I left for my brother’s house at quarter past seven. When I arrived, I was greeted by a group of seven or eight strangers. One of them was a member of the RCMP, who sat at the table talking with George. Millie was sitting in a chair by the wood stove, holding one of Sam’s teddy bears to her bosom. The look of misery on her face so complete I knew something had happened.

Poor Millie, I thought, she may not make it through this.

When she saw me, she immediately burst into tears. “Gord! Oh, Gord!” That had always been the hardest part of being in that house for me. I busied myself making a cup of coffee until the policeman finished questioning George. When they said goodbye and the crowd dispersed, I brought my cup over to the table and sat in the officer’s place at the table.

“What happened at the station?” I asked George.

What he said made me slam my fist down on the table. Michael had changed his mind and refused to take the test after all. “That’s if he ever had it in his mind to take the test at all,” George added bitterly. “I really thought we were going to have something to go on tonight, but now we’re no closer to finding Sam than we ever were. Only one thing has come from this.
