SUGAR ENANTIOMERS

In biology, enantiomers often react with organisms differently, because molecules frequently bind to receptors in the body that are also chiral. The enantiomers of glucose (D-glucose and L-glucose) react in the body differently. Our bodies can use D-glucose for energy but not L-glucose. L-glucose can be made only in a laboratory and is not found in nature.

DNA AND CHIRALITY

The double helix of DNA twists in a clockwise direction. The molecules that make DNA have chiral centers themselves, causing the intramolecular bonds in the DNA to spiral in restricted directions. DNA is a “right-handed” helix.
