THE Sphinx had spoken. Davis had turned it around a thousand times in his mind since that afternoon, had looked at it from a hundred different angles and under dozens of microscopes. There was no mistaking what Randolph had told him. And there was no doubt, either, of the moral of his story.

Davis wasn’t the first to blaze this trail. As alone as he might have felt in his situation, he’d just been given the green light. A senator could live all his life, closeted and quiet, and love whoever it was in his nature to love. Not all careers ended in shame. Davis could be with Kurt and still do his job. And still be who he was.

But that wasn’t all Randolph had told him. His words had been as much warning as encouragement. Go, he’d said, experience, find out who you really are. And then and only then, make your decision.

A lean body fell atop his, wisps of dark hair brushing along the sides of his face. “Nickel for your thoughts.”

“Highway robbery,” Davis said and slid his arms up around Kurt. He’d been lying face up on Kurt’s bed for the past hour, ostensibly napping but really just thinking, unable to sleep for the cadence of Randolph’s voice in the back of his head. Apparently Kurt was now onto his charade.

“Inflation,” he said, sliding to lie alongside Davis. “Times are hard.”

“I’ll sell my thoughts to the Chinese, then.”

“Davis.” Long fingers made their way across Davis’s cheek to his mouth, traced the outline of his lips. “What are you thinking about so hard? You look like you’ve been turned to stone.”

Davis smiled against the press of Kurt’s fingers, pushed a kiss into their tips. “I was thinking we ought to go out.”

Kurt’s brow furrowed. “Go out? Do you mean in public?”

“No. Not as such.” Davis saw the disappointment flit across Kurt’s face, the shadow of what he was giving up to be with Davis. “I’m sorry.”

“No, I know.” Kurt gave him a wan smile. “But then, what did you mean?”

Davis ran a hand up his side. “Aren’t there places we can go,” he said, “where I wouldn’t be recognized? Places where anonymity is…. I wouldn’t know where to start looking for them, but you—”

Kurt’s worried scowl broke sharply into a grin. He laughed aloud. “You want to go to an underground club? Oh God, Davis, what have I taken you for?”

“Oh. Oh, well, I suppose I’m a little old—”

“Nonsense.” Kurt sat up straight, clapping his hands. “Oh, my Lord, you surprise me every single day. Yes, by all means, let’s go clubbing, Davis Hudson. If you behave yourself, I’ll even take you to a fetish club.”

Davis reddened, looking up at Kurt fearfully. “Now hold on a second.”

Kurt laughed again. “I’m joking, I’m joking. What brought on this bout of curiosity all of a sudden?”

Davis pursed his lips. He couldn’t say outright that he’d gotten the idea from Randolph, but Kurt deserved something of a straight answer. “I got some
