IT WAS CHILLY as they left the resort and followed the trail that led away from the developed areas. Bradley had shown up for their date. It had been a week since she’d tried to avoid him and given up. There was something addictive about being friends with benefits. And she wanted to enjoy the benefits part a lot more.
A light snow had started to fall and Elizabeth let her worries about Lars and her job fall away. As the miles flew past and they got deeper into the wilderness, she even stopped worrying about her feelings for Bradley, which were still confusing her.
She’d wanted friends-with-benefits status, but her heart kept saying he was more. She woke up in the middle of the night and reached for the phone to call him, but now that they were lovers she hesitated. Calling him might make him think she wanted more. More than she’d agreed they’d have.
It hurt her to think that their friendship was suffering, but this afternoon none of that mattered. She’d always taken herself too seriously.
She’d been so lonely after he’d graduated and had decided to stop denying herself the chance to really live her life.
Bradley pulled to a stop in a copse of pine trees. She did the same. He got off his snowmobile and walked toward her.
“Are you okay? Did you lose the trail?” she asked, as he approached.
“No, to all of the above.”
“What’s the matter, then?” she asked, fumbling in her pocket for her phone. She had the ski patrol on speed dial.
“I need something from you, Lizzie,” he said, putting his hands on her hips and lifting her from her snowmobile. He set her on her feet but didn’t stop touching her and she knew what he wanted. The same thing she’d wanted since he’d left her bed.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and moved in closer so that their bodies were pressed lightly to each other. “What could that be?”
He lowered his head until their foreheads touched and he stared at her. His hazel gaze was so deep and intense that she was afraid he could see all the way to her soul. She didn’t want that. Didn’t want him to even get a hint that she was starting to think of him as more than her sex buddy.
She closed her eyes and kissed him. She needed to stop thinking. Sex. That was what this was about. And on this snowy afternoon, hidden between the pine trees, she needed to keep their focus on just that.
He held her face in his hands as he drew back, breaking the kiss. She opened her eyes and wished she hadn’t. There was something in Bradley’s expression that reminded her he wanted more from her than sex. She saw the longing there.
“Don’t do this.”
“Do what?”
“Don’t start caring for me,” she said.
“We’re friends, Lizzie. I’ve always cared for you.”
“Not like this. Please, Bradley, we said we’d be friends with benefits. You know what that means.”
“I do,” he said.
