MARC strolled up to Charlie Thibadeaux’s boat rental place with a brand-new fishing pole over his shoulder and a grin on his face.

“Hey, you ol’ coonass!” Charlie greeted him with an answering grin and slap on the back. “Where da hell you been keepin’ all dis time, you?”

He and Charlie had grown up together, gone to the same grammar school—on the rare days they’d both shown up. Back then, Marc hadn’t yet seen the value of a good education. Charlie still didn’t.

“Oh, here and there,” Marc answered, shaking his friend’s hand. “Brought you a present.” He handed him the fishing pole.

“It’s a beaut.” Charlie’s delight was mixed with obvious confusion as he hesitantly took it. “But what dis all about, boug? Wife make you give up fishin’ to get out da doghouse?” He glanced at the SUV, where Tara sat in the front seat. Bobby Lee and Kick were also there, in the back, waiting for his signal. But he knew what Charlie was thinking. A good guess, if you were talking about a bayou man.

Marc laughed. “Mais non. Not married, me. Not yet anyway,” he added for some incomprehensible reason. “Écoute. Got a favor to ask you, Charlie.”

“Anything for an old friend. Jus’ name it.”

“I understand one of your boats got messed up pretty bad a few months back. By some tourists hauling stuff they shouldn’t have been.”

Charlie’s face clouded with anger. “Foutu étrangers. Dey left my boat in da swamp to rot. I ever see those jackals again, dey won’ be comin’ outta no swamp alive, dat’s for damn sure.”

“Well, now.” Marc put a solemn promise into a grim smile. “How’d you like some help with that, mon ami?”
