ANASTASIA
âWhatâs taking so long?â
I can hear him stomping around on the other side of the locker room door, but he hasnât materialized yet. Itâs our first session, and weâre going to be getting on the ice late, which doesnât bode well for the next two months, or for Nathan retaining his life.
âNathan!â I yell, banging on the door.
âI canât come out.â
Iâm scowling at the door, knowing I look ridiculous, but I canât scowl at him since he wonât come out. âWhy?â
âThe leggings. Theyâre too tight. You can see everything.â
âIf you donât come out, Iâm coming in!â
His head pops out, body shielded by the door. âIâm being serious. Theyâre, uhâ¦You can see everything.â
âYes, we all get it. Youâve got a big dick. Blahblahblah, ego fed? Weâre late. Come on, letâs get started.â Brady approaches as Nate pulls back the door, wearing what are quite possibly the most revealing leggings Iâve ever seen. They look like theyâve been painted on, and you can see outlines. Very, very detailed outlines. âOh my God.â
Brady surveys him head to toe, then once more for good measure. Her hand lands on her hips and she shakes her head. âIâm sorry, Mr. Hawkins, but I cannot let you wear those.â Nate looks like a rabbit in headlights, hiding behind the door again. âDo you have anything else with you?â
âI have shorts in my locker I could put on over the top?â
âI think that would be a wise choice.â Nate disappears back into the locker room and I feel Coach hovering behind me. Turning to face her, she shakes her head. âItâs a slippery slope, Anastasia.â
âDonât know what youâre talking about.â Lie. Big lie. Huge lie. âShould I get warmed up?â
âUse protection. Ask Prishi. Your bladder is never the same.â
âWe arenât dââ
She interrupts me with a flippant wave of her hand. âWeâre both adults. Donât insult my intelligence; I see how that man looks at you. I want to see my best skater on a podium, not a birthing ball. Clear?â
âCouldnât be clearer, Coach.â
What she didnât consider with her little speech is the probability of her best skater dying of embarrassment.
And why does she only call me her best skater when I donât have witnesses?
Finally emerging from the locker room, Nate lightly nudges me in the ribs. âYou ready to do this, Allen?â
âNope, donât crash into me.â
âNo crashing into you, no birthing ballsâ¦So many rules, Anastasia.â
My eyes widen as I look up to meet his, his smug grin smiling down at me. His happiness is a comfort and itâs proof he isnât feeling nervous like I am. Proof that he doesnât realize that if this little experiment fails, I might finally break.
Iâm lost in my thoughts when fingers weave through mine. âItâs going to be okay,â he whispers as we approach the warm-up area. âIt might even be fun.â
I tut loudly. âIf itâs fun, youâre not working hard enough.â
He laughs, earning a hiss from Brady. âSpoken like a true tyrant.â
After warming up, itâs finally time to find out if this was a horrible idea.
