Chapter Thirteen

Lany

I blinked as I stared at the moon through the bars on the window. It was hanging low at the moment and seemed to dominate the night sky. It was a big moon.

I wondered if Sal could see it?

Was he even looking?

I missed him so damn much, the weight of it was threatening to sink me. With each day that passed, my heart grew heavier. I knew Sal was looking for me and he wouldn't give up until he found me, but I was starting to wonder just how long that would take.

I was leaning toward forever.

It was nights like tonight when the waiting seemed worse. My chest ached from trying to hold back my sobs of despair. Today was a little harder than most. One of the guards had let slip what day it was when he brought the kids back. It was the girls' birthday. I should be home preparing for a party, putting up streamers and blowing up balloons and stuff.

I shouldn't be stuck in some cell.

In another few weeks, it would be my anniversary. It would make sense if I was still being held captive by then. Sal and I never seemed to get the whole anniversary scene going. We always fucked it up somehow.

Granted, it wasn't always due to things we did, but we still ended up missing it or having it screwed up if we did try and celebrate it. We'd gotten very good at pretending our anniversary never happened.

Celebrating it for once would be a welcome change.

Celebrating it with Sal would be even better.

Celebrating it without a catastrophe would be freaking fantastic.

Wasn't going to happen, but it was nice to dream.

I frowned and glanced down when Sean whimpered in his sleep. Even after a week, he still wasn't getting used to being held captive. Every day he asked when he was going to be able to go home. Every day, he got in trouble with the guards for not doing what he was told. And every day, he cried himself to sleep.

My heart was breaking for him.

I pushed the hair back from his face, grimacing when I saw the tears stains on his cheeks. He'd come back with bruises on his cheek and a handprint on his neck. I wasn't sure what had happened. Sean refused to talk about it. He refused to talk at all except for a few short words.

TJ had said there was some altercation with one of the guards, but he wasn't sure exactly what happened. Sean had been taken out of the room they worked in. When he came back a few minutes later, he'd had tears sliding down over the fresh bruises on his cheeks.

I knew I needed to get these boys out of here before one of them broke. Sean was on the edge, and the others weren't far behind him.

Hell, I wasn't far behind him.

My ability to handle bullshit was running low. I knew it was due to missing Sal and the girls, but I was close to telling these fucks where to step off.
