CHAPTER 39

Lisa sat on the sofa, she sat with her legs pulled under her body and felt sick. Her mom`s Take a Break magazine was lying on the floor next to her cup of tea. Her dad was making breakfast and deliberately trying to make her feel sick. He seemed to find her predicament amusing and references to fried eggs and greasy bacon were starting to get on her nerves. Did men ever grow the fuck up? Her dad was nearly fifty now and he still played up in the pub when he got pissed. She was just glad that he didn’t drink down The Anchor; she would not have been able to cope if he started acting like a clown while she was working. She loved him with every inch of her heart. He was a proper dad, but he was a head melt at times and right now she wished he would go away.

Her mom sat on the sofa and sipped on her tea. She was a still a beautiful woman who radiated class; she even looked elegant in her pyjamas. God knows how her dad had pulled it off. He had started life on the same estate as The Anchor sat on, and had only moved a couple of miles down the road, but it was a different world entirely. Her dad had done well, he’d started a small business, making shelving and it had taken off. They weren’t rich, but they were comfortable. He hadn’t wanted to move to the other side of Wolves, the side that was situated against the Staffordshire countryside; he didn’t like the people and their overly snobbish attitude. Just because he had money didn’t mean he had forgotten where he had come from and who he was. Apparently he had been a lad in his time, or so he told her when he was pissed and rambling on the sofa.

Lisa’s mother had come from the posh side of Wolverhampton, and attended the town’s school for girls. She had left with good qualifications and a business brain, which had enabled her to help him promote his business. He was a talented engineer and good with his hands, she had motivation, drive and a mind that remained objective in most situations Now she was a HR manager who worked for the NHS and made big money, together they were sea and sand ;a perfect combination.

Dougie Nightingale and his wife Emily had been married for twenty four years. She had given birth to Lisa within a year of their first meeting. Emily had walked down the aisle or rather the corridor to the registry office when she was six months pregnant. It hadn’t been a shot gun wedding; they had just been so much in love from the first moment they met. They knew it had been right and they had gone with their instincts. His parents had loved the idea and helped all they could with the expense, hers didn’t; they thought she could do better than be with the man she loved.
