CHAPTER 16

“When it comes to judging individuals, I do not like remarks such as 'too good to be true.' They speak as though one is rewarding the nature of evil. Yet, ironically, we still wonder where all the good people have gone.”

CRISS JAMI, KILLOSOPHY

“Be with you in a second,” I called to the group of three women who’d just entered the bar. When I spotted how many shopping bags they held between them, I pasted a smile on my face and gestured to table seven. “Take that table over there, plenty of room for your bags.”

They nodded gratefully and wove through the late afternoon crowd toward the table I’d indicated. Ingrid would likely bitch at me for giving up a five-top for just three people, but she wasn’t anywhere in sight, and she could just deal with it.

Stop. Ingrid is awesome. Ingrid won’t care. Stop assuming the worst of people. You are not this person.

Breathing out a huge sigh—I was so disgusted with myself—I finished an order of two hot toddies and one spiced cider, then placed them on the pickup station for Ingrid to take. On a whim, I decided to serve the drinks myself, penance for thinking so poorly of Ingrid.

I’d been a real jerk recently and I needed to snap out of it.

Rex hadn’t contacted me or responded to my messages since last week, our tense exchange about going to his aunt’s house had been our last conversation. No texts waiting for me when I woke up, no surprise calls during the day just to check in, no ridiculous memes making me laugh. True, I’d only texted him once, two days ago, asking him to call me so we could discuss how to handle the whole living apart thing. He hadn’t.

I tried to ignore how much his silence bothered me, having to work extra hard to smile and be cheerful with customers and my coworkers as Thanksgiving approached. But it did bother me.

Whatever. He’s not my friend. He’s my boss. If I did something wrong, he can put it in my performance review and send it to HR.

I assumed “HR” in this scenario would be his faceless agent, who I still hadn’t met officially but who had been sending me emails during Rex’s radio silence.

She’d been passing along details for future events, sending me outfit options, asking about my travel preferences, and helping me sign up for my very first frequent flyer account. I liked her. Bernadette Loren was clearly efficient and good at her job while also projecting an air of professional friendliness.

I should get an agent.

After my uncomfortable confrontation with Walker, I’d made a point to call all my friends, one at a time, and break the news. No one was upset but everyone was astonished. A few people wanted to buy me wedding presents, and the resultant waves of guilt were overwhelming.

Like Walker, almost everyone had questions I didn’t know how to answer, which only served to make me feel like a complete moron and a horrible person.
