BY THE TIME THEY RODE back to the castle, three days later, Kiran was the happiest elf in the world.

Though something wasn’t right.

He couldn’t put his finger on it. It was nothing concrete. He believed Ceren’s promise not to run away again. He believed the emotion in the elf’s eyes when he said he belonged to Kiran, when he said he’d missed him, that he’d been afraid not to see Kiran again.

His mate wasn’t lying. He felt things for Kiran. He liked being with him, sleeping deeply by his side, coming hard on his cock. They’d ridden back on one horse, so that Kiran would protect his thief and allow him to rest, slumbering against his chest, and Ceren had slept most of the way, tired, but also counting on Kiran to keep him on the saddle, and safe.

It warmed Kiran’s heart, gave him hope—hope that his mate felt the same way he did. That he loved Kiran, like Kiran had come to love him.

He stroked a stray strand off his lover’s face as they finally trotted into the capital of Ebora, underneath the castle, tenderness filling him. He’d do anything for his elf and their babies. He felt complete with Ceren. Happy like never before. Free and yet not lonely.

His heart thumping, he nudged the horse up the steep road toward the castle. The gate was already open, a stream of merchants and courtiers going in and out. The festivities had to be long over, but there was a lot of traffic for such a small kingdom.

“Are we here?” Ceren stirred against him, rubbing a hand over his eyes.

“Yes. Soon you can rest properly.”

“Is that another word for sex?”

Kiran laughed. “Do you want it to be?”

His thief shot him a suspicious look over one shoulder. “As I recall since I first met you, finding myself in any room alone with you equals sex.”

“There you go, then,” Kiran said cheerfully as they entered the yard of the castle. “You have your answer.”

“Oh Gods...” Kiran could almost hear the eyeroll in his mate’s voice and it made him laugh even harder. “You’re insatiable.”

“I don’t recall you stopping me.”

Ceren grunted. “As if anyone could stop you.”

“No, not when it comes to you.”

His thief sighed and then shivered when Kiran placed a kiss on the side of his neck. “I’ve never wanted to stop you. You make me feel good.”

Kiran’s heart pounded harder. “I’ll always make you feel good, love.”

But Ceren said nothing else, and then the stableboys were there, grabbing the reins of the horse, and Kiran dismounted to help his mate down.

He’d get Ceren to talk, sooner or later, and Kiran would explain what he intended. But first he’d settle him in, leave him to rest, and go find King Royan.

He’d promised to help Kiran find a way to break Ceren’s sentence, and he wanted that done as soon as possible.
