I tried to fall asleep, but I couldn't. It took all I had not to ask her to stay in my bed with me. When she texted me the thank you, I felt sad for her. What did she mean nobody had ever defended her like that before? I couldn't believe that. Surely her mother had or maybe an old boyfriend or best friend. How could she feel that way? Brooke could be a pain-in-the-ass, but she was pretty amazing as well.

When Sherry said those things about her, I felt like knocking her out. I would never hit a woman, but she was pushing me to my limit. She pissed me off by saying that Luke would never put Brooke before his money. We all loved Brooke, didn't we? What, I thought? I meant like. We liked Brooke. I couldn't believe Sherry was talking like Brooke was some dumb girl that meant nothing. That wasn't true at all. Brooke was very smart and important to my job. If it weren't for her, things would have been so much worse for the company after my accident. She took charge and worked well with Jason.

What was with Jason asking her to go to lunch to talk about meetings? He was so full of shit. There was no reason for that. I had to wonder how much he flirted with her when I wasn't around to hear. My ass needed to be at work. I wanted to get there as quickly as I could. His mouth wouldn't be talking shit if he were in front of me. He wouldn't dream of telling me what a stupid decision I had made. Brooke wasn't happy when he said it. I could hear it in her voice.

The past month really had been nice. I had turned over the reins a bit more to my team. They were doing a great job. Maybe I didn't need to be up their asses every two minutes for them to work. It really was nice to sit in my living room, watching a movie, and looking out at my perfect yard. I was looking forward to relaxing in the hot tub and using my grill. Being stuck in the chair made me realize what I was missing. I thought about Brooke asking me about deer in my yard. I couldn't even answer her. Work had always been my only priority. Time was passing me by. It was pretty bad that Luke even thought I worked too much. He sure didn't mind calling me to do things on the weekends though. I could see why he cut his hours back and spent so much time with my mom, even though I was shocked that he had done it. Didn't he want his company to grow as large as he possibly could? Why would he give so much up to be with her? She was a great person, don't get me wrong. I just thought it was a crazy move on his part at the time.
