Lloyds Register said she was Greek, 6566 BRT.24

‘Steamer sinking quickly by the stern,’ the bridge men shouted down.

‘I’m not surprised, an old tub like that. Half these Greek ships are rotten,’ Otto Peters smirked.

The small and wiry figure of Assistant Coxswain Arnetzberger, understudying Bruno Petersen for the next voyage, appeared at the radio room door and asked me how the coastal stations were reacting.

‘Halifax has repeated the distress message and now the whole coast is up in arms,’ I told him. It sounded as though we had stirred up a hornets’ nest and we wasted no time in making for the open sea where we would spend the daylight hours.

On 24 January Zapp, Kals and Hardegen all wirelessed home that they had no torpedoes left and were returning to Lorient having sunk over 130,000 tons between them; Hardegen had even sunk a steamer with his deck gun because he had no torpedoes. It was shattering for Bleichrodt. We had crabbed all round Nova Scotia for a week and had only one rustbucket to show for it while the fuel bunkers grew gradually less. That night we spent the lonely hours cruising off Yarmouth.

The BdU signalled:

Bleichrodt, you are at the hotspot of their traffic.
