Riley was exhausted. He’d worked hard today, as if he was punishing himself, and his body ached. And maybe it was his imagination, but it sure seemed like Case had given him a few suspicious looks over the course of the day.

He was not cut out for sneaking around, that was for damn sure. And the worst part was, he couldn’t even get a little sympathy or a nice back rub from his girlfriend because nobody could know that was what Laura was to him—at least in his mind, anyway.

After dumping some ice in his largest tumbler and filling it with water, he sank onto his couch with a sigh. Maybe there was something mindless on TV that would lull him into a nap. Or something action-packed that might distract him from thinking about Laura and the fact he couldn’t have dinner with her tonight. Or read to her. Or anything else.

Then his phone rang.

For a few seconds, he thought it was Laura and his mood instantly lifted, but then he saw the word Mom across a picture of the two of them together and sighed. He hadn’t called her in a few days, having been wrapped up in what was happening with Laura, and she probably wasn’t happy about it.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hi, honey. Are you busy?”

“Not at the moment.” But just in case she was in a mood, he wanted to give himself an out. “I’m going out in a few minutes, but I can talk. How are things with you?”

“Good. Did your father tell you we’re going on a cruise next spring?” she asked, and he chuckled. “I know, but he has his heart set on it, and once he showed me all the included dining options, I was sold.”

“I think you’ll have a great time.” He could definitely see his parents on a cruise. His dad would probably buy a tropical shirt and his mom would wear a floppy hat.

“How is Stonefield? Are you meeting new people?”

“It’s good. I’m actually going to go to the bar in a bit and hang out. It’s a friendly town. And...” He hesitated, but he wanted to tell somebody about Laura. “I’ve met a woman I like.”

His mom made a little oh sound, and then her happy sigh echoed down the line. “Tell me about her.”

“Her name is Laura and she’s amazing. I was thinking about inviting her to your birthday, if you don’t mind.”

“Mind? I can’t wait to meet her! I don’t think you’ve brought a girl home to meet us since you were in high school.”

The girl made him wince, and he wondered if he should tell her more about Laura than the fact she was amazing. But if he told her everything about the situation, she might have strong feelings about it, and he didn’t want to hear it. And it would also make it harder to invite Laura to meet his family. He knew his parents well enough to know they wouldn’t make a scene in front of her, so he decided to wait.
