“I was going to show them around, Mother,” Mac said, brows furrowed.

“I’d like to get to know Dina and Jeff better. I’m sure you can find something to occupy yourself for a little while.”

The maid brought in a serving tray with slices of pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream. As she set one in front of Dina, Dina knew she’d better put on her tap dancing shoes. Leona Chambers was going to give her the third degree and she’d better be prepared.

Chapter Seven

When Mac found the small cedar box in a cabinet in the attic, there were two photo albums lying underneath it that he’d never seen before. With Dina and Jeff at the stables with his mother, he’d been drawn up here for the first time in years. The situation with Jeff and Robert Craft had stirred up questions in Mac about his own father, and now he wanted some answers.

Taking the albums out of the cabinet with the box, he sat on the floor with all of it. The white album was obviously a wedding album. He opened it, and his chest tightened.

There was a picture of his mother in a satin gown and long veil, looking into the eyes of the man Mac recognized as his father. There was no doubt about Mac’s resemblance to him. As he studied the couple in the photo, Mac saw that they looked totally absorbed in each other. Turning picture after posed picture, he could feel happiness radiating from them. His father looked like a tall, strong man who had wanted nothing more than to spend his life with the woman he had taken as his wife.

What had happened?

The second album contained pictures of Mac’s first two years. He wasn’t interested in himself as a child. Rather, he studied the faces of the two people who should have meant the most to him in the whole world. But as he flipped page after page, he saw his father’s expression become more serious. Month after month, something changed. The smile Frank Nightwalker gave the camera wasn’t genuine and when he looked at Mac’s mother, there seemed to be longing there. What had happened to the happiness?

The last photo in the album was of Suzette’s christening. Mac’s grandfather held her as Frank and Leona looked on, Mac by their side. Frank’s expression was troubled.

Had a second child brought more parental responsibility than his father had wanted to shoulder? Was that why he had left?

Setting the albums aside, Mac opened the box. There he found mementos he’d looked through as a child, not understanding what they were. There was a woman’s hair comb inlaid with turquoise and agate. Had it been a present to his mother from his father? In a small blue box atop a piece of cotton, he found two rings. Both were bands inlaid with turquoise and onyx, carnelian and lapis. The mosaic was the same on both, and they looked like wedding bands.

Picking up the album again, he searched for pictures of his parents’ hands.
