Chapter Seven
Brendan knew when he was being avoided. It wasn’t exactly hard for him to see. Violet went from spending nearly every waking moment with him, to having every excuse to not be around him.
He understood her classes would be starting in a couple of weeks and that work was still demanding even though she was working part-time now. Whenever he talked to his sister, she’d always say the same thing.
“She’s fine.”
“Seriously, you’re sounding like a stalker.”
“She’s here to live her life not be told what to do and not to do by you.”
He’d stopped asking, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t curious.
They’d had sex.
Violet found every reason to not be around him.
The day they did have sex, she’d been quiet afterwards, withdrawn. He didn’t figure that out until a couple of days after, and now he felt like a fucking pig for not seeing it.
Pen was heading home for the weekend, and so was Violet. That was all it was. A weekend home to celebrate their parents’ anniversary while Violet went to see her parents. He had a couple of days’ holiday to take, so he’d put in a request and been given them. He’d be flying out with the girls. There would be no avoiding him then.
On the day of the trip, he stayed over. With Pen there, he couldn’t do or say anything. Violet was studying, her head down in a book.
The movie that played was boring, and it didn’t hold his attention.
“I’m going to bed. See you guys tomorrow.”
They both said good night to Pen. He waited for the door to close to his sister’s room. His gaze was on Violet as she continued to read. He wondered if she was doing this on purpose, making him wait to talk to him.
The movie kept on playing, and he wasn’t interested.
“What’s going on?” He couldn’t handle the silence anymore.
She glanced up from her book, with a frown. “Huh?”
“Why have you been avoiding me?”
“I haven’t. I’ve just had work and a lot of other stuff to deal with.”
She still hadn’t looked up from her damn book, and he wasn’t happy. He didn’t know what he had to do to get her attention.
“You don’t want to talk about the fact we fucked?”
This did make her look at him.
Her blue eyes were shooting daggers at him. If looks could kill, he’d be dead.
“What is it, Brendan? Is it that I’m not falling at your feet?”
“Look, I loved being with you. What I don’t get is this cold shoulder experience. What the hell is going on?”
“Nothing is going on. I’ve got to study.”
“Right after we have sex all you can think about is studying even though classes haven’t started yet.”
She blew out a breath. “Why does this have to be about you? Why can’t I just need to study? To get ahead and to make sure I don’t screw up? I didn’t come here to fail.”
“I don’t want you to fail.”
“Then what is it you want?”
“I don’t want you to avoid me every single chance you get.
