CHAPTER EIGHT
THAT afternoon the sound of the doorbell sent twin feelings of relief and anticipation zipping through Jesse. Spiced with just a pinch of anxiety.
No doubt this was Emily and Jake bringing Allie home. This would be the first time Brock saw Allie except for his brief visit when she’d been mere hours old. What would he think of her precious little girl?
Jesse quickly rinsed and dried her hands before heading for the door. On the way she cast a glance at Brock seated in the leather recliner. He appeared to be asleep, but she knew better. One moment he lounged with eyes closed, head to the side, the next she’d check on him to find him watching her.
She gently shook his arm as she passed. “The Reeds are here.”
“Right.” He shifted, flinched, then scrubbed a hand over his face. “I’m awake.”
He’d been somber and restless ever since they got home around two. Unlike this morning; he’d been a fire-cracker at the hospital, demanding to be released when the doctors obviously preferred to keep him under observation for another day.
Navy doctors were used to getting their own way. But one thing she’d learned about Brock—he had an iron will of his own. She’d asked him once what he did in the Navy. He said he worked in air traffic control, and it was his job to make sure things happened how and when they were supposed to happen. Without fail.
Yeah, the man had a real talent for making things happen, so to nobody’s surprise he soon had a release from medical custody. He’d have to go back as an outpatient every day until the doctors were satisfied, but he’d be sleeping in his own bed tonight.
The bed she usually slept in.
Bother. Why’d she have to think of that now? The visual of him in her bed as she’d seen him in the hospital yesterday, half-naked, all golden skin and hard muscles with the sheet pooled at his waist, sent heat rushing through her, causing her cheeks to be inordinately pink when she reached the door.
No help for it. She blew out a sigh, pasted on a smile and opened the door.
“Emily, Jake. Come in.” Jesse stepped aside for them to enter, catching her bundle of love as she launched herself from Emily’s arms. “Hello, sweet pea.” She cuddled Allie close and met Emily’s lively brown gaze. “Thanks for watching Allie.”
“Oh, pooh.” Emily waved the words away. “She’s a doll. Slept right through the night. Besides,” she said, patting her rounded belly, “I needed the practice.”
“You won’t convince me of that.” Jesse bounced Allie on her hip. “You’re the best mother I know.”
“Next to you maybe.” Emily’s attention turned to Brock. “How is he?”
“Stubborn. I know it was important to him to be home, but I almost wish he’d stayed one more night in the hospital. Much as he pretends otherwise, only pride and sheer force of will are keeping him upright in that chair. And his fever worries me.”
“Honey, for
