Chapter Eighteen

“I’m hiring Jackson Fischer,” Patrick said, watching carefully to see how Austin would respond.

She narrowed her eyes at him from across the table in the small cafe where they’d met for lunch.

“Why now?”

“Because the police have stopped looking. You said we would give them a fair shot, and I think we have. It hasn’t even been a week and the DA has already requested a new trial date because they aren’t going to be ready for the first one.”

Austin sighed. “That’s just the way trials work. That’s why I told you it was our first trial date. It’s probably going to get moved six more times because both sides are going to have motions to file, judges will go on vacation, things will get moved around. It’s just the nature of the system.”

Patrick knew she was right, but it was still frustrating. In the last week, it felt like they’d argued more than they’d played, and he’d had to fly back to California twice. Now, they were having lunch in New York before they flew to Colorado for the weekend. It was time to resume Austin’s training, and she was going to take on some more of her duties as a house submissive tonight as well.

There would be a shift in reception with Isabelle since Cassie couldn’t be there. After that, there would be a spanking demo. Friday nights almost always had a demo, and this time Patrick had volunteered. He’d been asked to do rope, but he’d only done one rope scene with Austin and they needed to be more familiar with each other before they did a show for a crowd.

“If he’s there tonight, I’m talking to him while you do your shift at the reception desk.”

Austin sighed and waved her hand. “Fine. I guess if your mind is made up, I can’t talk you out of it.”

Patrick grinned. “No, you can’t. Are you ready to put all this aside for the weekend? You’ve been very lax with your submissive protocols this week. I think we need to work on that.”

Austin winced. “I know. I’m sorry, Sir. I promise to be on my best behavior this weekend. And thank you for not being too hard on me. I like being your submissive, but I also…”

“Need to be a smart ass sometimes?” he teased. “I know. You value your freedom and I’ve done my best to give it to you.”

Austin smiled. “Yes, you have. I know all the legal stuff is a big strain on what we have. It will be good to set it all aside and just be Dom and sub for a couple days.”

“I hope you mean that, because I’m going to ramp up your training this weekend.”

He watched her throat work on a swallow and knew she was nervous about where he might take them. He’d made sure his suite was free this weekend so they could stay at Solitaire the whole time. He was even arranging for food to be delivered. As little of the outside world as possible was going to be let in.
