Jane Sacheverell resisted her boy Will's going to university as fiercely as she had done the entry of her boys to one of the major public schools. It put her on the spot when a Nottingham alderman of her acquaintance offered him a scholarship to Jesus College Cambridge in February 1694. ‘I am in great fears to send my son to the university', she wrote to her brother-in-law, ‘being a hazardous place for youth as I hear.' She was for keeping him under Mr Greatrix's kindly eye for a while longer ‘and let him be his own master after at the Inns of Court'. Will himself was content with this. So Jane prevaricated for more than a year, musing, in March 1695, that her dear husband had spoken of his finishing his education abroad with some time at Utrecht, ‘if the times were peaceable'. The outcome is not revealed by her correspondence.36

Motherly concern features again, in letters around 1710 to 1712, from his mother to William Bowes, of Gibside in County Durham, studying at Cambridge. Anxiety fills her page in a letter enquiring ‘what spa water thou hast drunk':

I cannot think of your coming down without your tutor along with you. I shall live in hopes. I writ formerly to know how you have come on in your studies but have had no answer. Dear child, you may be assured that it would be a great satisfaction to me to know what books you read though I do not understand them, to enquire after it in way of discourse with other people.
