ZACH STOOD IN THE EARLY morning sunlight, wearing a fancy leather vest over his normal clothes, about to begin his stint as a temporary actor.
He was standing near Great Granddad Alistairâs cottage on his own property. The sun beamed down from a cloudless blue sky. The day was going to be pleasantly warm, like a good spring day should. A stiff breeze blew across the paddocks surrounding the homesteadâs original cottage, swaying the wheat.
He could hear Cecily in his mind, crying foul. He couldnât remember the number of times sheâd begged him to take a small part in whatever acting stint she was currently involved in. Heâd steadfastly refused. He had never wanted to be involved in this crazy industry. He was a farmer. He would always be a farmer. He didnât belong in front of a camera. He belonged on the land, in the wide-open spaces surrounded by fresh air and doing what he loved.
He had no idea why heâd agreed to take part in this movie. He just found himself going along with it, especially if it meant spending more time with Amber.
So why would he agree to do something for Amber that heâd categorically denied Cecily? Zach swept his hand over his curls as Rufus arrived, immediately heading towards Rose, his Kelpie, sitting off to the side, by the fence. Zach squinted into the blazing sun.
He didnât have a hat. He wasnât allowed to wear one because he hadnât had one on during that cringe-worthy rescue scene. Instead, he had some Indiana-Jones style whip stuck in his back pocket.
What a sheep farmer would be doing with a whip was incomprehensible to him. Did they seriously think heâd use a whip to round up his sheep? Rose was much better than any whip in doing that job, thanks all the same.
And then there was the vest.
Normally, he wouldnât be seen dead in something like this. Heâd never worn a vest in his life. He certainly hadnât had anything remotely like this on during his impromptu rescue, but that didnât seem to matter. What a joke. As if any decent country guy would be dressed like this. Heâd at least have a hat on. And the part theyâd persuaded him to take, one half of a Romantic Couple?
No way would any farmer take on a horde of hungry zombies without a shotgun, even if it was to save the love of his life. Well, maybe Harry would, but he had skills and experiences that surpassed normal farmers. But hey, this was Hollywood. Zach knew all too well what lies they spun.
Heâd lost Cecily to its glossy allure after all. He was about to lose Amber to it as well. Not that he had had any claim on Amber in the first place. Or Cecily for that matter.
Rufus greeted Rose with a playful woof, before coming over to Zach, sitting in front of him, all wagging tail and doggy breath. He gave the dog a good rub down, glancing around. If Rufus was here, it was guaranteed that Amber was nearby.
