“I think my mom likes you,” Jeff said as we pulled out of the parking lot. A cigarette dangled from his lip and he looked so cool with his dark sunglasses on and his hand on top of the steering wheel. I felt cooler just for sitting next to him that day.

“Well, I don’t work at the pretzel stand so I’ve got that going for me.”

“And you wear pink. I never thought my mom would be such an advocate for the color pink but I’ll be damned,” he laughed. He lit his cigarette with the car’s cigarette lighter and took a long drag. The smoke circled around him slowly before being sucked out the car window. “So where should we go today? I think I’ve exhausted all of my romantic places.”

“I don’t mind. We could go see a movie,” I suggested but he furrowed his brow and shook his head. “Or not.”

“I have a better idea,” he said. “But we’ll need to stop by your house first.”

“Um. My mom is probably home,” I said.

“Well then, nevermind. We’ll just do without,” he said.

He got into the left turn lane and made a U-turn, heading back out of town and toward the winding road he took me down the other day to ask me to prom. When we arrived at the park, there were no other cars there. Everyone else was busy at school or work but there we were pulling up to an empty park at ten in the morning with our backpacks thrown in the backseat.

We got out and made our way back to the pier we’d sat on just a few days before. I took off my shoes and sat them behind me, sitting down on the edge and letting my toes graze the water’s surface. It was cool and felt nice now that the weather had warmed up and the humidity of early summer had set in. I sighed and leaned back on my elbows, feeling the rough wood press against my skin.

Jeff stayed standing slightly behind me on the pier and when I looked back at him, he took his shirt off, letting it fall to the pier carelessly.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Going swimming,” he laughed, unbuckling his belt and struggling to pull his tight black pants down so he was wearing only his boxers.

“I don’t have my swimsuit,” I said.

“I did try to stop by your house to pick one up,” he said. “But no.”

“I didn’t know that’s why we were stopping by my house and anyway my mom is home all day. We’d be busted!”

“Calm down, crazy. It’s not the end of the world,” he said.

“But now I can’t go swimming!” I said, a little upset that he could just jump in and I would be left on the pier to just watch.

“Well, you’re wearing underwear,” he replied, winking.

“You don’t know that!”

“Actually, I saw when you sat down earlier,” he said. “Not that I was looking or anything but they’re definitely blue.”

“Blue and white striped,” I corrected.
