Chapter 16

Leaving the courthouse, Wally arrived at Harry’s office in time for lunch. On his way, he picked up a deluxe pizza from Spencer’s Mill. Wally had never met anyone who didn’t like Aunt Lydia’s pizzas. She uses organic whole wheat flour for the pizza crust and homemade sauce from organic tomatoes. She even makes her cheese.

Wally explained his favor to Harry. Harry agreed to do it but said the same thing as Judge Judy: that Elizabeth was stubborn and would probably refuse to go on a dinner date with him, even if she lost. Wally told Harry that he knew, and had a plan B.

Harry mentioned to Wally that he had a daughter, Cindy, who was working in Samantha’s law firm as a paralegal. Wally told Harry that he used to go out with Cindy. He explained to him why he broke off with her. Wally did not tell Harry what Cindy and Michael were doing in the law library.

Harry went to see Elizabeth and tell her why she must go out with Wally on a dinner date if she lost in court. Furious, Elizabeth ran out of her office to see her mother.

Elizabeth caught her breath and said, “Mother, Harry wants me to go out on a dinner date with Wally Kozak if I lose Christine’s lawsuit against Samantha. Wally promised Harry dinner at Spencer’s Mill. Harry will be very upset with me if I refuse to go out with Wally, but Christine will not tell me why she got fired. I’m sure there’s a good reason that she doesn’t want to tell me, and I know that Wally will probably win.”

Joan smiled. “Don’t worry, Elizabeth, if you do lose in court, just refuse to go out with Wally. I’ll buy Harry dinner at Spencer’s Mill to keep him happy.”

On the day of court, Wally was prepared. He made sure that Jonathan Quick was in court. Wally needed him to be a witness. When court commenced, Elizabeth had Christine Bell take the witness stand to give testimony. She stated that Samantha Franklin fired her without warning or explanation. Therefore, Samantha fired her without just cause. Christine Bell stepped down.

Wally called Jonathan Quick to the witness stand. Wally asked Jonathan, “Did you have an affair with Christine Bell?”

“Yes, I did.”

“Did you embezzle just over $60,000 from Samantha Franklin to buy jewelry for Christine Bell?”

“Yes, I did.”

Wally said, “I have a list of jewelry that you bought from Steve’s Jewelry Store. Please examine the list for errors.”

Jonathan looked at the list and stated that there were no errors.

Wally asked Jonathan, “During your affair with Christine Bell, was your wife Betty dying from terminal breast cancer?”

Jonathan said, “Yes, she was.”

Wally had no more questions for Jonathan. He called Christine Bell to the stand. Wally asked Christine,” Did you have an affair with Jonathan Quick?”

Christine said, “Yes I did, but I don’t see how that’s relevant.” She admitted to receiving expensive jewelry from Jonathan and knew that his wife Betty was dying from terminal cancer.
