I moved through the party on the arm of Gianni. It was held at the Grand Ballroom in the Manhattan Plaza, and I had never seen anything quite like this place. The room was bounded by two walls of arched windows that were floor-to-ceiling, with a Roman column between each one. Above the windows were etched friezes that looked Roman as well. The ceiling was at least 30 feet, and, in the middle, was a grand chandelier, and the ceiling was aglow with a beautiful purple light that made the entire room seem like a fairy-land. Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory popped into my head, which it always did whenever I was surrounded by a colorful dream-world such as this place.

Yet it wasn’t anything like Willie Wonka’s Factory, I knew. It was far more elegant. From the classical arches and columns, to the tables decorated with lit candles and huge white centerpieces, the place exuded wealth and prestige. This was the place where Truman Capote held “Black and Blue” balls, and where the super-wealthy held their wedding receptions and bar mitzvahs and the like.

And everywhere I looked were women who were slim and dressed in evening gowns and elaborate masks. Some of the men looked like I would imagine Mafia men to look – average height, black hair, thick eyebrows and large noses – but there were quite a few guys who didn’t look like a stereotypical Sicilian as well. There were several men who were tall and blonde, and a man who had bright red hair and freckles. There were men who seemed to be in their 60s and older, and a few that looked to be in their early 20s. In all, there were well over 100 men in that ballroom, and an equal number of women.

I felt my heart pounding as I knew what Gianni wanted me to do. If only I were there for a social gathering, things might have been okay. I still would have been nervous – I was out of my element, after all, as I had never ever been to such a seemingly “high society” function such as this was – but what was expected of me from that night made me terrified. What if I couldn’t identify anyone? Would Gianni go ahead and kill me? I wouldn’t be of any use to him if I couldn’t name names, so why would he keep me alive? What if one of the men identified me? I couldn’t be sure that Piero didn’t videotape his raping me and showing the tape to his friends. He was the kind of guy who would do just that.

Then I remembered that I was wearing a mask, so nobody would be able to identify me, and I felt my pulse recede just a little. I glanced at Gianni, who was standing next to me, holding my hand, looking very proud - erect posture, head held high, his beautiful eyes scanning the room – and I thought that nobody had ever looked more handsome than him that night.
