Once Luke had showered and Kai had made herself a little more presentable, they headed downstairs to forage for breakfast. When they stepped off the elevator, Kai saw Georgie and Julia in a heated debate in a corner of the lobby. Luke tried to steer them in the opposite direction, but his mother waved them over. Kai straightened her shoulders and resisted the urge to check her clothing. She was pretty sure Luke’s family would take one look at them and know exactly what they’d been up to.

“Lucas, talk some sense into your sister. The conference room we were planning to use for the card party tonight has been taken over by the contractors fixing the café, so she wants to switch the party to the casino.”

“Not the casino itself. A banquet room inside the casino.”

“You know how your father feels about gambling.”

“Then he doesn’t have to gamble. He doesn’t even have to show up if he feels so strongly about it.”

“Georgette!”

“This is my wedding, Mother. Not yours. Not Dad’s. I get that you’d prefer to forget that Brad owns a casino, but that won’t make it go away.”

“Lucas—”

But Luke raised his hands to ward her off. “Not my department. In fact, I think when I get married I’ll elope, if this is the kind of argument that ensues when one has an actual wedding.”

Georgie flicked a glance at Kai. “What if your fiancée wants a big wedding?”

Luke curved an arm around Kai’s shoulders and hugged her close. “Then she can hash it out with her mother. One of the great things about being a guy is that you get to show up at your wedding dressed in a tux, partake of all the delicious food and high quality booze, and go home with the woman you love without having to do any of the work.”

“Is that how it works?” Kai asked.

“We’re not talking about your wedding,” said Julia. “We’re talking about your sister’s. You’re no fan of casinos, either.”

“As it happens, I won’t be here tonight. One of my clients is having a meltdown so I have to run home this afternoon. I’ll be back tomorrow evening.”

“Oh, Luke, really?” Georgie sighed. “I did tell you he couldn’t take a proper week off,” she said to Kai.

“You did. So I was prepared.”

“You’ll come tonight, won’t you?”

“Of course. No matter where you hold it. I even have the perfect outfit for a card party, though I admit I’m not sure what a card party consists of.”

“Oh, they’re fun. Basically, we set up tables and put out decks of cards. And food and drink, of course. Everyone plays whatever games they like and some don’t play at all, they just socialize. There are raffles for spa appointments, bottles of wine, things like that.”

“If what you’re telling me is that just by showing up I can win another massage, I’ll be there with bells on.”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. Can’t wait to see your bells.” Georgie gave her a thumbs-up.

Julia hmmphed. “I guess I’m outvoted.
