CHAPTER SIX

THEY were among the earlier arrivals at the fair. Mark was driving a station wagon today, and he found parking easily in the visitors’ parking field. The exhibitors’ parking, on the other side of the fence, was already filled with jeeps and trucks and trailers for carrying animals.

In the fairgrounds men and women in jeans and broad-brimmed hats moved around purposefully, milking cows, grooming horses, leading pigs and sheep to viewing enclosures, replacing old hay, replenishing drinking water. Children were everywhere, some helping with chores, others having a marvellous time running around with their friends.

Tiffany walked beside Mark, an unconscious lift in her step. She saw the looks that came his way from women who were obviously taken with his ruggedly handsome appearance. She was less aware of the men glancing her own way, attracted by the soft curves of her slender body and the vitality in her small heart-shaped face. She only knew that, for all that she might try to deny the fact to herself, she was intensely happy in Mark’s company.

Turning from a pen of squealing piglets, she looked at him with sparkling eyes. ‘There’s something about country fairs, isn’t there? The animals, all spruced up for the occasion. The farmers and the excited children. All that straw and hay underfoot.’

Mark grinned at her. ‘The noise and the dust and the smells.’

‘Yes!’ She was warmed as much by his smile as by the lovely sense of something shared.

His hand went out, and she stood very still as he traced a light path from her eyes to her lips. For a few seconds she was oblivious to the noise and activity all around them; there was only the man and the hunger his touch aroused in her.

At that moment an animal dashed past them, a wayward calf, darting erratically this way and that. Behind it, in hot pursuit, came a little boy. Tears ran down his cheeks as he shouted, ‘Whoa! Whoa!’ but it was evident that the calf was too fast for him.

Mark reacted with a speed Tiffany had not guessed he possessed. In seconds he had caught up with the playful animal, and was looping the rope that was around its neck over his hand. Half a minute later, with a few comforting words, he was putting the rope in the grateful child’s hand.

‘Well!’ Tiffany said, when the little boy was gone.

‘Well, what?’

‘I’m impressed.’

Mark looked amused. ‘Because I can run faster than a child?’

‘Not exactly…’ Tiffany stopped, a little hesitant about putting her thoughts into words.

‘You see me only as a desk-bound lawyer. In no shape to corner a runaway animal.’

She shot him a mischievous grin. ‘Something like that.’

He stood very close to her, laughing down at her. In fact, even before she’d seen him catch the calf, Tiffany had recognised that today Mark was not the sophisticated lawyer she had argued with in a glass and chrome city building. Dressed in a red and white checked shirt and jeans that moulded themselves to his hips and thighs, he could easily have been taken for a cowboy.
