Morovski and a handful of his men joined them. The UN

contingent included six British and six French soldiers,

under the command of an American lieutenant, and half of

them seemed to speak Russian to some degree. Two of the

Brits attached themselves to John, ostensibly bringing him

up to date on the latest Premier League soccer dramas. But

the pair of supremely self-contained and confident men

weren't with the UN regardless of their blue helmets. They

were there to make sure one of MI6's frontline negotiators

got out safely.

The atmosphere was surprisingly congenial, despite

some despondency among the students. The only

discordant note came from Babcock. He was facing up to

Lieutenant Andwele, a tall, wide shouldered African-

American who appeared to have the patience of a saint.

"I'm not leaving my car here!" Babcock yelled. "It's

a rental, for fuck's sake! It'll get totaled if it stays behind

and I'll get hammered by the company!"

"Sorry, sir." Andwele was imperturbable. "I can't

allow that. You'll travel in the carriers with everyone else."

"The hell I will!"

In John's opinion, the journalist was probably

looking to do a U-turn as soon as the escort left them at

Khorog. But the car wasn't the only thing to be left behind.
