Chapter Thirteen
âSeriously, guys, itâs not like I sold my soul to him or anything,â I grumped for the umpteenth time in the back of the High Table security forcesâ minivan. Weâd had to take it since they hadnât gotten the new tags for Cassiaâs SUV yet.
Arden growled low as she drove the hulking thing down the highway, keeping her eyes on the road. Merlin sat in front to guide her with what he remembered, and Cassia sat with me. She had been a little more forgiving, but still sulked.
âYou donât understand, Marcus.â She explained quietly, âLuci hasnât taken any of us to his place before and you get to just waltz in? Weâre hurt. And you made a deal with him? Thatâs not High Table procedure.â
âIt was what was needed to protect the High Table,â I countered and she frowned. âLook, if you want to tell Uncle Yen what I did because you have to, I understand. I respect your position as head of security, I truly do. But if weâre going to get this shit taken care of, we need the High Table in the clear.â
She looked out the window, then back at me. âIâm more upset that you saw his place than anything to do with the High Table. Iâve only been the head of security for a year or so now, and you making calls like this the way you have been shows that you have almost as good a head for it as I do. I like that about you, Marcus. I do.â
She smiled at me softly and touched my thigh. âWe can fight over a lot of things, and protecting the things we hold dear will always be one of them.â
I was touched until I realized what she had said and how she said it. âDid you mean to say that we would always fight over things like that?â
âYes.â She nodded happily, her hand gripping my leg tightly. âSo long as you are strong enough to protect what you care about, like the High Table and our patrons and family there, we will continue to fight with each other. And such fights they will be.â
You really do have to come up with some sort of code word for that, Marcus. Iâm inside her head and even I donât quite know what she means.
I laughed at Galaxyâs statement and Cassia joined me, having heard the remark from her benefactor.
I pulled my phone out and saw that I had a text from Uncle Yen telling me he hadnât had anything turn up in his hunt for information about Galaxy, but he was going to keep searching. After that, I saw I had an email from Connellâs mom.
Hey Marcus,
I know itâs been a while since I was able to send any photos or anything of Connell, things have been crazy and heâs been going through some things at school, but heâs been playing soccer lately and heâs really good at it!
I attached a video so you could see him kick some ass.
